Readers weigh in on 'Best of Bluff Country' for 2012

The results are in for Best of Bluff Country! The people have spoken, sharing their opinions for the Bluff Country Reader's eighth annual Best of Bluff Country contest. Readers voted on their favorites in a variety of categories from foods like pizza, steak and fish fries to favorite places to bike, hike, camp and shop for antiques.
The annual contest results are tallied from surveys printed in the Reader, which are sent in by readers by mail or readers took an online survey through our web site, www.bluffcountrynews.com.
The following are the winners in each "best" category surveyed by the Bluff Country Reader. There were 34 categories total. The contest was revamped a little this year with some categories staying the same and some being replaced with new categories.
Breakfast: Winning for the place with the most tempting breakfast menu is Bowl Winkles at B&B Bowl in Preston.
Brunch: The restaurant serving up the best brunch, according to voters, is the Village Square in Fountain.
Burgers: The Wolf's Den in Ostrander won this year for the best burgers around.
Desserts: Village Square in Harmony won the title of serving up the best desserts in Bluff Country.
Friendliest service: Voted No. 1 for "friendliest service" to its customers in Bluff Country was the Wolf's Den in Ostrander.
Fries: The winner for the best-tasting fries was the Wolf's Den in Ostrander.
Ice cream: Village Square in Harmony is this year's favorite for best ice cream.
Kid-friendly: Rated best kid-friendly establishment in Bluff Country by voters is the Wolf's Den in Ostrander.
Pizza: The Wolf's Den in Ostrander was voted number one in Bluff Country for serving up the best pizza pie.
Steaks: The winner for serving up the best slabs of beef was the Branding Iron in Preston.
Festival: Buffalo Bill Days in Lanesboro was voted the best area community festival by readers.
Local band: Readers voted Elvis impersonator Brad Boice of Chatfield as their favorite band to listen to in Bluff Country.
Antique shopping: Generations of Harmony Antique Mall in Harmony was the winner in this category for providing the best antique shopping environment around.
Bed and breakfast: Looking for a place to rest your head at night? Go to the Jailhouse Inn in Preston, the winner of the best B&B category.
Camping: Readers voted the Old Barn Resort campground, rural Lanesboro, as the best place to set up one's campsite.
Family destination: Niagara Cave near Harmony won this year for favorite family-fun destination.
Golfing: The Root River Country Club of rural Spring Valley is the winner for best golfing in Bluff Country.
Hiking: Forestville State Park was voted the No. 1 hotspot for hiking in the area.
Lodging: The Trailhead Inn in Preston is the winner for best lodging in the area.
Picnic spot: Forestville State Park was voted as the best place to gather with friends or family for a picnic.
Public park: Winning for best public park was Lanesboro's Sylvan Park.
Scenic view: Readers voted the city of Lanesboro as the destination for the best scenic views.
Bar: The Wolf's Den in Ostrander is the winner for the best bar in Bluff Country.
Fish fry: Readers voted the Wolf's Den in Ostrander as the best place to stop in for a fish fry.
Restaurant: When it comes to the title of best restaurant in the area, the Wolf's Den in Ostrander won this category.
Arts venue: The city of Lanesboro won in this new category for having the best arts venue.
Boutique/shoppe: This new category had a three-way tie. The winners are JuliaClaire Repeat Boutique in Preston, Olivia's Attic in Lanesboro and the Amish Connection in Harmony.
Farmers market: Readers voted the Lanesboro Farmers Market as being the best farmers market in Bluff Country.
Fishing spot: The Root River was voted as the best spot to drop a line and wait for the fish to bite in Bluff Country.
Historic site/museum: Voters decided the best historic site/museum to visit in Bluff Country is the Fillmore County History Center in Fountain.
Nature/learning center: Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro was voted the winner in this category.
Play area for kids: Readers in Bluff Country decided Sylvan Park in Lanesboro is the best area to take one's kids for a day of play.
Section of trail: Readers who get out and about area bike trails weighed in on their favorite section of trail, deciding the section from Harmony to Preston was the best trail section.
Stretch of river: Those who enjoy activities on the river, voted the city of Lanesboro as having the best stretch of river.
