Frac-sand mining not compatible
with outdoor tourism of northeast Iowa

A report released this May, funded by the Wisconsin Farmers Union, takes a detailed look at the economic impact of frac sand mining in Wisconsin. Titled "The Economic Benefits and Costs of Frac-Sand Mining in West Central Wisconsin," it addresses many of the same issues we are grappling with in northeast Iowa.
Among its many insights is the observation that some economic activities are incompatible with frac sand mining. Among these incompatible activities is tourism based on outdoor recreation. Good thing nobody ever comes to northeast Iowa to enjoy the great outdoors, eh?
Winneshiek County needs a 24-month moratorium on frac sand mining, not a year, not 18 months. Let's do this right. We have much to lose, and nothing to gain, by a slipshod rush job.
