While on vacation in 2011 I attended a rock swap and sale held in Crawford, Neb. It gives you some idea of what to expect on a smaller scale at the first ever Coulee Rock Club swap meet. It’s set for Saturday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, at the Stoddard Village Park in Stoddard, Wis.

One day of the weekend after Labor Day could be an ideal time to kick back, take a short trip and check out something fun and, yes, a little bit different.

You could rock it!

As a member of the Coulee Rock Club out of La Crosse, I want to let you know about a first-time event the club is holding.

A swap meet is set for Saturday, Sept. 7, - rain or shine - from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Stoddard Village Park in Stoddard, Wis. There will be rocks, jewelry, fossils, minerals and used lapidary equipment to buy or swap.

You might find a lovely piece of locally made, wire-wrapped jewelry... or perhaps some of the tools or machines used to help create it.

Rocks on display could include the beautiful, mesmerizing swirls of color found in agates... specimens that fluoresce under black lighting or fossils that would put a fine start to a student's school project.

You just don't know what kind of treasure awaits you. It's sort of like the allure of garage sales with the fun of seeking a special or unexpected, but soon very-much-desired item.

I attended a well-established, yearly rock swap one August weekend in 2011 at Crawford, Neb., while on vacation. It was certainly fun to see all the different offerings while having the advantage of rock lovers on hand to "talk shop" and answer questions.

I know members of the Coulee Rock Club will be just as happy to talk with you about their rocks and related wares. If you might like to get into rockhounding as a hobby, they can readily help you get hooked up with the club. Membership is just $12 a year per family. You can't beat that price for the enjoyment and learning.

Of course, you can always contact me about the club at my e-mail address given below. But for a great overview of rocks, equipment and advice - all in one handy location - the Coulee Rock Club swap meet is your answer.

Stoddard is located eight miles south of La Crosse. Take Highway 35 south from La Crosse. Turn east on Highway 162 in Stoddard and you'll see the Village Park. Watch for signs.

You could take along a picnic lunch to eat at the park pavilion. Also, promise me you'll savor the beauty of the Mississippi River valley on your drive to Stoddard.
