The gift of kindness

This holiday season let your generosity be measured by the memories you share with others and not by material possessions.
4 cups thinly sliced potatoes
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 1/2 cups milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 dash cayenne pepper
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup grated cheese, to sprinkle on top paprika
In a small sauce pan, melt butter and blend in flour.
Let sit for a minute.
Add all of cold milk, stirring with a whisk.
Season with salt and cayenne.
Cook sauce on low until smooth and boiling, stirring occasionally with a whisk.
Reduce heat and stir in cheese.
Place half of the sliced potatoes in a lightly greased one quart casserole dish.
Pour half of cheese sauce over potatoes.
Repeat with second layer of potatoes and cheese sauce.
Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
Top with some paprika for color.
Bake uncovered for about 1 hour at 350°F.
With only a couple days left until Christmas, I encourage you to gift someone an act of kindness. Put in a little time and effort into bringing someone happiness or helping someone to suffer less. Even the smallest contributions can have a big impact on someone's life.
Kindness is free, but it's priceless. The measure of your life will not be in what you accumulate in material possessions but in what you give away. You get what you put in, so give freely. Kindness can be in the form of a smile, by lending an ear or offering a helping hand. If you want to be happy, then make others happy.
No matter how much happiness you give away, you will never run out! So make it a point to do something nice and unexpected for those around you, especially those who may never be able to repay you.
In five years from now, people won't remember the gadgets you gave them, but they will remember the way you made them feel. Warm memories endure even when money and prominence fade. So plant seeds in the minds and hearts of those you touch. From this, only love and kindness will bloom.
As we move into the new year, I encourage you to view the world with a new sense of awareness. Become more mindful of your words and your actions. Do something every day to improve your life and the lives of those around you. Make a commitment to teaching those who know less, supporting those who are striving, tolerating those who are different and caring for those who have less!
Let the spirit of the holidays live in you always! Spread love and kindness to the people around you every day. Let the giving spirit you initiate spread like a virus, infinitely touching the lives of people you may never meet, across boundaries you may never cross, in ways you may never have thought possible.
A rich life is filled with the kind of wealth you can take out of this world with you.
Give the gift that keeps on giving! If you are looking for more tips on how to live a more fulfilling life, I encourage you to read "The Angel Affect." It is available for a limited time at Harmony IGA, Preston IGA and Rushford IGA. It is the perfect gift for the holidays.
