Orrin Dean Vander Plas, 74, of Rochester and formerly of St. Charles died on June 8, 2013, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

He was born June 4, 1939, in Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Gerald and Lela (Ledaboer) Vander Plas. He attended and graduated from high school at the Waseca Southern School of Agriculture.

He was a lifetime farmer and had worked at IBM in Rochester for several years.

He was president of the Winona County National Farmers Organization for two years.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He took pride in teaching each of his kids how to play the card game 500; though he was rarely beaten. His greatest love was spending time with his children and grandchildren, and he enjoyed vacations to Walt Disney World, Las Vegas, Branson, Wisconsin Dells and his annual trip to Cass Lake with his family.

He is survived by his five children; David (Candace) of Templeton, Calif., Barbara (Rick) Weatherly of Rochester, Mary Ann (John) Corcoran of Madison, Wis., Michael of Eagan, Minn., and Matthew (Amanda) of Robbinsdale, Minn; nine grandchildren, Andrew and Garrett Vander Plas, Krista, Joshua and Corrin Weatherly, Jack Corcoran, Caleb, Jovie and Beckett Vander Plas; five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Chase, Rachel, Presley and Jamie; his brothers, Arvin (Lois) of Harmony, Marlin John (LaRae) of Green Lake, Wis., Marlow (Patricia) of Preston, Glen (Nancy) of Joice, Iowa, and Mark of Preston; and two sisters, Eloise (Gary) Self of Inola, Okla., and Rebecca (Dale) Grabau of Preston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and an infant daughter.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday at Ranfranz & Vine Funeral Home in Rochester.
