Velma Mae Jones, 100, died Dec. 12, 2012, at the Golden Living Center in O'Neill, Neb.

She was born Feb. 24, 1912, the daughter of Lee and Vella (Traver) Young, in Pauline, Iowa. Velma was the eldest child, having three sisters and two brothers. As children growing up, their parents had a general store. Velma developed a love for sweets; chocolate was her favorite.

It was at the store where she met her first husband, Ralph Calif, and they were married in 1935. During these years, she not only raised a family, but also did gardening, canning of vegetables, raised and milked goats, and raised chickens.

In 1968, Ralph died and in 1969 she married Gerald Jones. In 1993, she moved from Minnesota to Stuart, Neb., and in 1996 she moved to Bassett, Neb. Later in 1996 she moved to the Golden Living Center and resided there until her death.

Survivors include a son, Eugene (Betty Joe) Calif of Long Pine, Neb.; one granddaughter, Velma Mae Calif of Greenbush, Minn.; stepsons Kenneth (Nancy) Jones of Cherokee, Iowa; Maynard (Marlys) Jones of Rochester, Minn.; Roger (Arlene) Jones of Independence, Ky.; Jason Jones of Manterville, Minn.; and Steven Jones of Harmony, Minn; 21 step grandchildren; 39 step great-grandchildren; and eight step great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, her brothers and sisters and their spouses, two sons, Avon and Rodney, and a stepdaughter, Janet Johnson.

Memorial services will be held at a later date and internment will be in the Stuart Cemetery.
