Lanesboro netters open season

The Burros opened their volleyball season with a win at Glenville-Emmons on Aug. 27, then lost a close match to Schaeffer Academy two days later. Both contests were marathon, five-set affairs.

In a back and forth match, LHS won the first set by the narrowest of margins (26-24), then appeared headed for a quick win after following up 25-17 in the second. The Wolverines came back in the third, winning 25-11, then tied the match with a 25-15 victory in set four. But the Burros were not to be denied, winning set five 15-10.
Senior middle hitter Regan Howerton placed 11 of 11 serves inbounds. Rightside hitter Olivia Haug, a junior, also served with accuracy (13 of 14) and put away four kills. Junior setter Steph Erickson did her job, setting up 41 attacks. Senior outside hitter Kaia Hungerholt scored five kills.
For G-E, middle hitter Madi Ziebell scored 11 kills. Setter Bre Lundmark had 15 assists.
Lanesboro versus Schaeffer Academy Aug. 29
Returning home, LHS hosted Schaeffer Academy on Thursday, losing 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 16-25, 13-15.
Haug led the team with eight kills. Hungerholt and junior middle hitter Alexis Jorgenson had 7 kills each, while Howerton contributed 5. Erickson contributed 27 assists. Jorgenson also scored four ace blocks, and smoked seven ace serves. As a team the Burros recorded a 92 percent serve receive total. Howerton was error-free from the line, placing 21 of 21 serves in bounds.
For Schaeffer Academy, Hannah Harris recorded 13 kills and 10 digs. Carol Cheng had eight. Emily Baber had 31 set assists. Kristen Peterson contributed six digs, as did Mackenzie Harper.
LHS is scheduled to host Hope Lutheran on Tuesday, Sept. 3. On Sept. 5, the Burros will travel to Houston.
