Traveling to Houston for the tip-off of the 2013-14 basketball season, the boys from Lanesboro ran into a stubborn bunch of Hurricanes, but got their first win nonetheless.

After seven first half lead changes and three tie scores, the Burros took an eight-point lead into the halftime locker room. Houston was never able to close the gap in the second period, losing to LHS by a score of 58-50.

Lanesboro had trailed 23-24 with four minutes left in the first half, but got the last four buckets on a pair of fast breaks, a Kole Ruud three-pointer, and a Liam Dorn shot from the post. After the Burros stretched the margin to 11 early in the second period, Houston battled back to within six points. But LHS responded every time the Hurricanes threatened to close the gap thereafter.

Lanesboro senior guard Kole Ruud led all scorers with 27 points, including four buckets from beyond the arc. Senior forward Luke Rogers added 18, while junior guard Zach Voeltz chimed in with six.

Ruud also led the team in steals, swiping the ball seven times. Junior forward Liam Dorn led the backboard battle for LHS, snagging 10 rebounds. Rogers had eight boards, while Voeltz grabbed six.

The Hurricanes were led by senior forward Sam Ross, who hit seven of 12 from the field for 18 points and capped his first double double of the year with 10 rebounds. Classmate Mason Drake, also a forward, added 13 to the Hurricane total while grabbing eight rebounds.

The Burros were scheduled to host Spring Grove on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Look for details in next week's Republican-Leader. The next game on the calendar is Dec. 9 at Schaeffer Academy, followed by a trip to LeRoy-Ostrander the following evening. Grand Meadow visits LHS on Dec 16.
