Plainview's Piper Hills Golf Course was the scene of the P-E-M/Jodi Rahman Invitational on Tuesday, Oct. 9. Nine Burros competed in the cross-country event, which featured distance runners from 14 programs. Characterized by a series of long, gradual hills, the course is the last one Lanesboro's teams will compete on until the section meet later this month.
Due to cold and windy conditions, meet officials allowed runners to wear sweatshirts under their uniforms.
Cannon Falls junior Emi Trost (ranked third in state Class A polling) won the varsity 4K in 14:41, finishing nearly 35 seconds ahead of Kayla Woltz of Chatfield. Third went to Dover-Eyota's Ahna Buntrock, who helped the Eagles to a first-place finish in team competition. The hosting Bulldogs took second place as a team, followed by Chatfield.
Lanesboro senior Johanna Bearson took 50th out of a field of 83, crossing the finish line in 19:02. Junior Heather Boyum recorded a time of 19:28, while senior Kirsten Ruen finished in 19:45.
LHS Coach Ellen Cullen said that Bearson's time represents a new personal record. "She has taken over 4 minutes off her time from the beginning of the season," she noted.
In the boys' 5K varsity race, Pat Reinschmidt of P-E-M won with a time of 16:30, six seconds ahead of Kingsland's Richard Swanson. Reinschmidt came into the race ranked ninth in the state. Third place went to Winona Cotter's Matt Schrupp, who logged a time of 16:47.
Cotter won team bragging rights, followed by PEM in second, St. Charles in third.
Burro sophomore Travis Troendle took 39th place with a time of 18:46. Freshman Nathan Eversole finished in 19:33, while sophomore Matthew Kiehne logged a time of 21:53. There were 94 runners. Senior Erik Peterson did not run due to shin problems, Cullen said.
Three Lanesboro runners competed in the junior high 3200M, which drew 44 contestants. The top four spots were won by P-E-M, with eighth-grader Grant Rubin leading the way in 12:03 (a pace of 6:04 per mile). Burro Aaron Eversole took 22nd, finishing in 14:10. Ben Gjere recorded a time of 14:56, while Dakota Ahmetasevic crossed the line at 16:50.
The Section 1A meet will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, at Northern Hills Golf Course in Rochester. All Burro varsity runners are eligible to compete.
