The Fillmore Central volleyball team opened the season last Thursday with a win over the newest member of the Three Rivers Conference, Winona Cotter, 3-0.

The Ramblers joined the TRC this year after several years in the Hiawatha Valley League. Set scores were 25-20, 25-13 and 25-8.

Tuesday night the Lady Falcons traveled to Chatfield for a non-conference match with the Gophers and Thursday they travel to Lewiston-Altura for another TRC match. Monday night the team will host Lanesboro for a non-conference match-up.

Chatfield and Fillmore Central are considered two of the top contenders in this year's Three Rivers Conference. In the latest Minnesota Coaches Association poll, Chatfield is ranked No. 10 in Class AA, and Fillmore Central is No. 10 in Class A. Other area schools ranked include, Bethlehem Academy (No. 1, Class A), Mabel-Canton (No. 6, Class A), Wabasha-Kellogg (No. 9, Class A), Kasson-Mantorville (No. 6, Class AA), and Stewartville (No. 7, Class AA). Marshall, the defending Class AA champion, is ranked No. 1 in AA. Caledonia was the runner-up in Class AA last year.

In the match against Cotter, Fillmore Central hit .275, with 27 kills in 69 attacks, and served just 87.8 percent (65/74).

"It was a sloppy match," said coach Denise Case, "and we were shaking the rust off on a very slippery floor. But, a win is a win, so we'll take it."

Leading the serving were Taylor Case (17/17, 3 aces), Larissa Armstrong (14/14, 3 aces), Tayah Barnes (14/16, 4 aces), Sammi Bakke (12/13, ace) and Sara Schultz (2/2).

The hitting attack was very balanced, led by Taylor Case (8 kills, .444 hitting), Victoria Peterson (6 kills, .286), Morgan Malley (5 kills, .714), Leah Scheevel (5 kills, .364) and Kaitlyn Aug (2 kills, .400). Ace blocks were recorded by Case, Bakke and Aug.

In serve receive (SR), Case was 11 for 11, Peterson and Schultz four for four, Barnes eight for 10 and Armstrong seven for eight. Armstrong (9) and Barnes (5) were the team leaders in digs.

Malley had 23 of the team's 27 set assists. Peterson had the other four.
