The 2013 football playoffs "played out" pretty much the way the prognosticators figured it would go...#4 Fillmore Central beating #5 Goodhue, 13-12, and then the #4 Falcons losing to #1 Blooming Prairie, 29-0. The #4/#5 match-up in the first round of the playoffs is always the most interesting, and competitive, game of the first round of games.

In the exciting win over Goodhue, the turnovers were the same, each had three...Goodhue had three more first downs, 10 more yards passing and 93 yards more in passing, but the bottom line was a one point win for the Falcons.

Goodhue was "knocking on the door", but a hit by Logan Masters and a fumble recovery by Josh Jones, preserved the win for Fillmore Central in the last two minutes of the game. Jones also had a pair of interceptions in the game, accounting for all the Falcon "take-aways", and six tackles (2 solo's, 4 assisted)

Other defensive standouts include Jordan Miller (5 solo tackles, 1 assisted), Andy Love (four solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles), McKinnen Stone (2s, 7a), Tyson Ristau (1s, 4a), Connor Hanson (2s, 6a), and Monty Holm (1s, 7a). Holm, Hanson and Ristau had solo "sacks."

Offensively, the Falcons got two touchdown passes from quarterback Bryce Whitehill. Jordan Miller caught the first TD pass in the first quarter, giving the Falcons an early lead. Collin Bennett kicked the all-important extra-point, an x-pt that turned out to be the game-winner.

Goodhue came back with a touchdown near the end of the first quarter, cutting the Falcon lead to just one, 7-6. Jordan Miller had a "key stop" on the two-point attempt by Goodhue, preserving the Falcon lead.

Logan Masters caught the second TD pass from Whitehill in the fourth quarter. The "strike" covered six yards. The catch capped off a 69-yard drive, that took nearly five minutes off the clock. The extra-point was no good, but the Falcons now had a 13-6 lead.

Goodhue came back in the middle of the fourth quarter to score, cutting the Falcon lead to just one, 13-12.

And then came the Josh Jones heroics, fumble recovery in the end zone, as time was running down. Goodhue had moved the ball from their own 16-yard line, to the point where Jones and Masters combined for the "defensive stop of the game."

The stat sheet shows Jones returning the fumble 55 yards, but most importantly, time had run out and the Falcons prevailed, 13-12.

In the loss to the #1 seeded Blooming Prairie team, Fillmore Central just didn't execute very well. "I thought we had some missed opportunities, said coach Chris Mensink, and some chances to put points on the board. Our kids played physical and were in good position most of the night, defensively, but BP made plays," continued Mensink.

"We turned the ball over too many times," added Mensink. "And, offensively, we had a tough time moving the ball. Our kids played hard and have nothing to be ashamed of...Blooming Prairie has a good team and are well coached. Their defense was better than I thought going into the game," Mensink concluded.

The Falcons had six turnovers for the night, four interceptions and two lost fumbles. In addition to that, the Awesome Blossoms defense held the Falcons to just 165 yards of offense, 96 rushing and 69 yards passing.

Connor Hanson capped off his final game with a great performance, 13 tackles, four solos and nine assisted. Tyson Ristau had a team high five solo tackles, along with three assists. McKinnen Stone had four solo tackles and Josh Jones added three. Logan Masters also had three solo tackles, along with three assists.

McKinnen Stone was the "workhorse" on offense, carrying the ball 22 times, for a net of 35 yards. Bryce Whitehill had nine carries for 23 yards.
