On Oct. 17, the Fillmore Central football team lost to Southland, 21-7, bringing its overall season record to 2-6, 1-4 in the Three Rivers Conference-South. That brings to a close, the current era of the Three Rivers Conference for football. Next year Fillmore Central will be part of the new Southern Minnesota Football Alliance, Blue Division. The TRC and Hiawatha Valley League will be combining and forming three new conferences on a two-year trial basis. FC will be with the "smaller" schools and part of the "Blue Conference" (I believe). Nine schools will be in the Blue Division, with games scheduled during "zero" week next year. The eight largest schools will form the Red Division, and the White Division will be the next eight largest.
Dan Gatzke was the workhorse for the Falcons, carrying the ball 26 times for 153 yards, and one touchdown. Tom Henry (3/5 yds), McKinnen Stone (3/6 yds) and Brandon Breitsprecher (4/-4 yds) also had their "hands" in on the rushing attack for Fillmore Central.
In the passing department, Breitsprecher was 3/12 (16 yds), Gatzke was 0/1, and Stone was 0/1(1 INT). Receiving the passes were Gatzke (-1 yd), Henry (1/1 yd) and Andy Coyle (1/16 yds).
Gatzke got his touchdown run of four yards just into the second quarter. Collin Bennett kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7. That is the way the first half ended. Gatzke's score finished off a 74-yard drive for the Falcons.
The second half was not very productive for the Falcons. In their first four possessions they ran just 11 plays, punting three times and giving the ball up on an interception the fourth time.
Devon Block had a nice return on a kickoff in the fourth quarter, but the offense stalled about midfield and gave the ball back to Southland. Fillmore Central's last possession resulted in one completed pass to Andy Coyle, three incomplete passes and a quarterback sack.
Defensively, in the second half, Fillmore Central did have some nice plays by Dan Gatzke, Andy Love, Jake Ristau and McKinnen Stone, but couldn't stop the Southland offense from scoring twice and getting the win 21-7. Tackle leaders were Logan Masters (4 solo, 1 assist), Dan Gatzke (5s, 7a), McKinnen Stone (3s, 3a), Tom Henry (1s, 5a), Devon Block (3s, 5a), Andy Coyle (0s, 5a), Jake Ristau (3s, 9a), Andy Love (1s, 5a), Nick Ebner (3s, 5a), Clay Fishbaugher (0s, 2a) and Dylan Birch (0s, 5a). Andy Love came up with the Fillmore Central fumble recovery and Devon Block had a pass interception.
"Working" the special teams were Logan Masters (KO return, punt return), Dan Gatzke (KO return), Devon Block (KO return, punting) and Collin Bennett (KO, extra points).
This past Tuesday night, Fillmore Central traveled to Rushford-Peterson for the first round of the playoffs. The Falcons were seeded No. 6 and R-P was No. 3. Winner of the FC/RP game will play the winner of the Kingsland/BA game, Saturday, Oct. 27.
