Fillmore Central second at volleyball tourney; beats Southland in three

The Fillmore Central volleyball team traveled to Wabasha-Kellogg last Saturday and came out with a second place finish, suffering its only loss to No. 2 state ranked Wabasha-Kellogg (14-25, 21-25).

The Lady Falcons did get wins over Red Wing (21-10, 21-16), Cochrane-Fountain City (21-16, 21-12), Dover-Eyota (21-17, 21-7), Goodhue (22-25, 25-14, 15-8) and Winona (25-19, 19-25, 15-11), before suffering the loss to the "northern" Falcons in the championship match.
Last Thursday the gals got a Three Rivers Conference win over Southland, 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-9), improving their conference record to 3-1.
With the TRC win over the Rebels and the 5-1 record at the Vets (W-K) Tournament, Fillmore Central is now 9-2 for the season.
In the win over Southland, Tor Peterson (aka, Victoria) led the team with 11 kills and a hitting efficiency of .450 (11 kills, one error, 20 attacks). She also hit five of seven serves and was 4/4 on serve receive (SR). Sammi Bakke was hot at the service line, connecting on 19 of 20, with four aces. Bakke also had four kills and hit .333 (4-1-9), picked up five digs and was 2/2 in SR.
Taylor Case nailed six ace serves, connecting on 16 of 19 serves. She also had five kills and led the team with six digs. Defensively, Chelsea Rislove was 15/15 in serve receive. She also hit seven of eight serves. Morgan Malley had 21 of the team's 22 set assists, hit 5/6 serves and came up with four digs. Leah Scheevel had two kills and one block assist. Kaitlynn Aug hit 12 of 14 serves, two aces, two kills and one block assist. Defensive specialists Sara Schultz (6/8 SR) and Danielle Zinsmaster (6/7 SR) also played a key role in the win over Southland.
Tuesday the gals traveled to Chatfield for a key TRC match and then host Dover-Eyota on Thursday.
The eighth grade volleyball team, coached by Jordana Whalen, got a win over Southland: 25-16, 25-15, 25-19.
