While Fillmore Central won the ballgame against Mabel-Canton, the margin of victory, just counting field goals would have been 56-55. Throw in the free throws and the margin of victory was a bit more comfortable at 75-62. The Falcons hit 19 of 23 from the line, while the Cougars were seven for 10.
Isaac Sveen for two. Dan Gatzke (33) is ready for the rebound, just in case. The Falcons beat Mabel-Canton and advanced to the sub-section semi-finals in Rochester.
Contributing to that fine free throw shooting were Isaac Sveen (7/8), Dan Gatzke (6/7), Tyler Eickhoff (3/4) and Ryan Baker (3/4). Fillmore Central hit 10/13 in the first half, and 9/10 in the second stanza, including 6/6 during the last three minutes of the game.
Dan Gatzke, who's only played in seven games so far this season, scored 22 points to lead the Falcons in scoring. Gatzke hit eight of 17 from the field and 6/7 at the charity stripe in this "break-out" performance.
Equal to the task was Isaac Sveen. Sveen had 21 points, including seven for 12 from the field. He also had a team high nine rebounds. Tyler Eickhoff contributed 16 points, including 2/5 from three-point range.
Also contributing to the scoring were Ryan Baker (8), Zach Olstad (6) and Ryan Mayer (2). Zach Olstad was also credited with 11 assists and three steals.
The win means the Falcons will play Spring Grove. That game was scheduled for Tuesday night. Fillmore Central lost to Spring Grove by 19 points, 76-57, back on Feb. 16. Spring Grove is the No. 2 seed and FC is the No.3 seed. If the Falcons beat the Lions, they would play in the 1A East Sub-section championship game on Saturday, 2:30 p.m., in Rochester.
