With two meets and a conference tournament, the Lanesboro High School golfers were busy last week as the season winds down.
LHS at LOGM
On Tuesday, May 14, LHS played LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow at Cedar River Country Club outside Adams. Lyle/Pacelli was also there, but only competed against L-O/GM.
LHS won the women's competition, 241 to an "incomplete." That's because L-O/GM only fielded two golfers.
L-O/GM golfer Kaitlyn Kling nonetheless medaled for the ladies, bringing in a round of 47. Burro Johanna Bearson was just one stroke back. Other varsity scores that went into the team total for LHS included a 61 by Alexis Jorgenson, a 64 from McKenzie Hanson, and a 68 from Madeline Snyder. Brooke Kimball also played for the varsity.
In boys' competition LHS lost a close one, 206-202.
Tyler Sloan medaled for L-O/GM with a 48. Three Burros were right behind with rounds of 49. That group included Liam Dorn, Tristen Chiglo, and Adam Sutter. Markus Mulvihill (59) posted the fourth varsity score. Nathan Eversole also played for the varsity.
LHS boys at G-E
The Burro boys then traveled to par 36 Northwood Country Club outside of Glenville on Thursday, May 16. Host Glenville-Emmons had only three varsity players, turning in an "incomplete," but Houston gave LHS a close match.
The Hurricanes finished with a team score of 180 to 184 for the Burros.
Dorn won meet medalist with a round of 40. Chiglo (46), Sutter (47), and Mulvihill (51) also posted team scores. Eversole and Nick Wagner also played on the varsity round.
Devin Nelson had the low round for G-E (44). For Houston, Sam Ross led the team with a 41.
The SEC Conference Golf Tournament kicked off on Friday morning at the par 37 Cedar River Country Club. Due to threatening weather, play was shortened to nine holes.
"The rain got to be too much for the course and the kids as well," LHS coach John Smith noted. "It downpoured at times and the course was really wet and soaked all morning long."
Houston won the boys' team competition (184), followed by Lyle-Pacelli (188), LeRoy-Ostrander/Grand Meadow (191), and LHS (208). Glenville-Emmons posted an "incomplete."
Tyler Sloan of L-O/GM tied for meet medalist with Spencer Hoff of Lyle-Pacelli (42). Dorn tied for fifth on the individual ranks, bringing in a 46.
Chiglo (50), Sutter (50), and Mulvihill (62) posted team scores with Dorn.
All-Conference honors went to the top 11 male golfers. That included Dorn, Chiglo and Sutter. Mulvihill received Honorable Mention. The top rank went to Houston's Sam Ross. Dorn was second.
In girls' play, no teams had enough players to post a team score, primarily because of conflicts with other events, such as field trips.
LHS competitor Bearson had the lowest round (46). Kling of L-O/GM posted the next-best score (50), followed by Maggie Leif of Lyle-Pacelli (57), Allie Sloan of L-O/GM (70), and Hanson of LHS (71).
Bearson, Kling, Leif and Houston's Kelly Jerviss were the four women's players named to the SEC Women's All-Conference team, with Bearson earning the top ranking. LHS gave Hanson Honorable Mention. She was ranked at No. 5 in conference meets.
