It was hot and windy in Eyota on Sept. 11, as teams of runners from 11 schools competed in the D-E Invitational cross-country meet.
Nine Burros kicked up their heels at the well-attended race, which was laid out on a course that LHS coach Ellen Cullen described as relatively flat land. There were 104 runners in the 5K boys' varsity and 84 runners in the 4K girls' varsity event. Forty-three junior-high participants ran in the 3200M race.
Chatfield senior Kayla Woltz won the 4K in 16:04, besting D-E senior Ahna Buntrock by three seconds. For the Burros, junior Heather Boyum crossed the line in 19:46, taking 36th place. Senior Kirsten Ruen returned to competition from an achilles injury, finishing in 20:23. Senior Johanna Bearson finished with a time of 23:12.
In the 5K, Pat Reinschmidt of PEM broke the tape in 16:36. He was followed by Lake City senior Carston Dammann, at 16:47. LHS sophomore Travis Troendle took 25th place with a time of 19:58. Freshman Nate Eversole crossed in 20:19. Sophomore Matthew Kiehne finished with a time of 22:03.
In the seventh and eighth grade race, Carl Kozlowsi of Lake City finished first in 11:56. Burro Ben Gjere took 18th with 15:09. Aaron Eversole was one spot behind with a time of 15:19. Ahmetasevic Dakota checked in at 17:33.
Cullen said she was glad to have Ruen back, and even though her senior wasn't satisfied with her first race of the year, the ability to train now should improve her times.
On Tuesday, Sept. 18, Lanesboro runners were scheduled to travel to Hok-si-la Community Park for the Lake City Invitational.
