Willow Creek Golf Course was the site of the Stewartville Invitational Tournament last Thursday, where athletes from 16 boys varsity programs gathered to compete.

It was a difficult day for golf - breezy, with temperatures hovering around 40 degrees. But for the hosting Tigers, that didn't seem to make a difference. Stewartville took first in team totals (335) followed by the Byron Bears (352). The Bears had won the tourney for the last three years.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa (357), Lake City (362), and Kasson-Mantorville, which tied with Hayfield at 365, rounded out the top five spots.

Lanesboro sent four players, and managed a team score of 387. That placed the Burros in 12th.

"It was a really cold and windy day for golf but the boys played well for their first match of the year," LHS coach John Smith said. "It's early yet and we will look to improve next week and as the year progresses.

Burro senior Tristen Chiglo carded a 94, followed by sophomore Isaac Bierman 95. Junior Johnathan Bierman and sophomore Adam Sutter both shot 99.

The meet medalist was Jordan Miller of Fillmore Central, who carded a 79. Hunter Fjerstad of Byron also came in at 79, and the pair played a tiebreaker handicap hole for the crown. Third place was shared by Victor Peterson of Blooming Prairie and Nick Hillemeirer of Byron, who both shot 81.

According to the latest school schedule, both Lanesboro golf teams (boys and girls) are set to host Kingsland today (Thursday). The boys play at the Lake City Invitational next Monday and both squads host Lyle/Pacelli the following day. May 1 finds both teams traveling to the Wabasha-Kellogg Invitational.
