A Tuesday, Jan. 29, date versus Houston was postponed last week, but the LHS girls hit the home court hardwood versus Rushford-Peterson two nights later. On Friday, Feb. 1, the Burros hosted Glenville-Emmons.
Lanesboro vs. R-P
LHS was defeated 93-39 at home on Thursday.
The Trojans ran away with the scoreboard early, launching a 19-0 run that lasted through the middle of the first period. The Burros never got closer than 20 after that.
"They played an amazing pressure defense," LHS coach Kelly McMillen said. "A lot of our turnovers came after we brought the ball past the half-court." Turnovers heavily favored the visitors, 31-12.
That half-court pressure was effective in cutting off passing lanes and harassing shooters. However, rebounding was even, at 20 per team.
Olivia Haug scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Alisa Warnes had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Kirsten Ruen also scored 9 points.
At center, Haug was the assist leader for the Burros, passing for three scores.
R-P's senior forward Amy Todd scored her 1,000th career point in the first half, and totaled 35 points, 2 rebounds for the game. Sierra McNamer, Kendra Crawford, and Cody Manfull were also in double figures.
Lanesboro vs. Glenville-Emmons
The Burros topped the Wolverines 61-26 on the following night.
"We talked about turning it up a little bit..." McMillen said, "Trying to control the boards and force them to take some tough shots."
LHS did just that, forcing G-E into more shots from the perimeter than they were comfortable with. The Burros led 35-11 at the half.
"We just pressed the ball and played with much more urgency," McMillen noted.
Warnes had 15 points and 7 rebounds. Johanna Bearson sank three three-balls on the way to 12 points, 7 rebounds. Olivia Haug and Bailey Gartner each scored 9 points. Haug grabbed 7 boards, while Gartner had 6. Kirsten Ruen totaled 7 points, 5 rebounds. Chelsea Hanson had 3 points. Heather Boyum grabbed 3 rebounds and scored 2 points. Kaia Hongerholt had 2 points and 2 rebounds.
Gartner had a team-high 5 steals and passed out 3 assists with only 1 turnover. Bearson had 4 assists, but more turnovers.
Sophomore guard Madi Ziebell led the Wolverines with 13 points.
The Burros made up the Houston game on Monday Feb. 4, winning 53-43. Look for details in next week's Republican-Leader. The team travels to St. Mary's University for a doubleheader with Hope Lutheran on Thursday, Feb. 7. The following night, the girls will travel to LeRoy-Ostrander.
