When over 80 women's track and field programs gathered at Hamline University for the Minnesota State High School League's Championships on June 7 and 8, Lanesboro/Fillmore Central/Mabel-Canton thrower Olivia Haug was on hand to represent her team.

Haug qualified for state by winning the 1A Section championship in discus, achieving a distance of 114-11.0. On her first throw at Hamline, she sailed the steel 103-11. Her next two tries resulted in fouls, so the sophomore had to settle for that throw to make it into the finals round. Unfortunately, with the high quality of the competition, it wasn't enough. She finished 11th, just one place shy of getting three more throws in the next round.
"She was very disappointed," L/FC/M-C throwing coach Jared Pierce reported. "The ring was new to her, and it threw off her steps to her spin some forcing her to arm the discus or reach across her body to throw...
"As a sophomore it is great that she took first in both sub-section, and section. Making it to state as her age is a great accomplishment. She now knows what it is like and it should be great motivation to get back there next year and her senior year. If she continues to work hard in the discus she has the potential to make the podium both next year and her senior year. I also would like to say that I got a lot of help this year from Dan Sharpie coaching both shot put and discus."
It was the end of another outstanding season for the L/FC/M-C thrower. Haug won three discus competitions as a freshman, moving past the hundred-foot mark on May 8, 2012, with a new personal record fling of 104-07. She did even better in 2013 meets, winning the event five times with just one second place. All of her competition throws surpassed 100 feet in 2013. Haug's best discus throw so far came on May 7, 2013, at 117-02. She also had one win and three seconds in shot put this season.
Senior Nailah Hill of Breck School won the 2013 Class A state championship at 139-11. Junior Katelyn Weber of St. Clair was second at 132-04. Third went to Sarah West of Stewartville, a senior who achieved a distance of 119-09. Haug had the sixth-highest seed coming into the tournament.
