The 'run' is over...
...but, not before a second place finish

The Fillmore Central/Lanesboro baseball team only won five games this past season, but they made the best out of every one of those wins, especially in tournament play! The Falcons were 2-1 in the first three games of the season, beating Caledonia/Spring Grove and Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland, but then went on a nine game "skid" to finish the regular season at 2-10.
Going into the playoffs, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro got the #5 seed and traveled to play Rushford-Peterson (#4). The Trojans beat the Falcons during the regular season 7-6, but that loss was avenged with an 11-3 win. FCL had reached the "double-elimination" portion of the tournament, so a loss to Wabasha-Kellogg in the next round wouldn't mean the end of the season. They did lose to the "northern" Falcons, but got to play Chatfield next in an elimination game. They "took care" of another regular season loss with a 7-3 win over the Gophers. Next up was Lewiston-Altura, a team that "ten-runned" them during the regular season. They beat the Cardinals in a "nail-bitter," 8-6, and collected the red ribbons following the win.
"Who would have thought it," head coach Keith Larson told his kids, following the win over L-A. "No one gave us a chance," he added. "You believed in yourselves and look where you are. On to the section tournament." Most teams would hold up a #1, or even a #2, for runner-up. When the picture taking came around the FC/L players held up a FIVE, signaling their #5 seed coming into the tournament.
The Falcons lost to Hayfield in the Section 1A elimination game, but a runner-up trophy from the sub-section tournament and second place silver medals are something they can live with for the rest of their lives!
In the 4-1 loss to the Vikings, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro came up with one run on just four hits.
Two of the hits came in the fifth inning when the Falcons scored their only run. Devon Block led off the inning with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Garrett Boggs. Block then scored on Niko Anderson's rbi single.
Also getting hits were Clay Olson and Jake (JT) Tammel.
Josh Jones started the game on the mound and was relieved by Nick Ebner in the fourth inning. Jones gave up three runs, all earned, two walks and four hits. He struck out one. Ebner pitched the last 2 2/3 innings and gave up one run, earned, and three hits.
With the loss to Hayfield, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro finished the season with a 5-12 record, and of course, a runner-up spot in the record books for the 2013 1A East Sub-section baseball tournament. Great run, Falcons! You put some "sports excitement" into our lives, something we haven't seen for a few years!
