"It's the highest total we've had since I've been treasurer since I started in 2008," said Mabel Lions Treasurer Greg Turner regarding the result of the club's 25th annual telethon dinner and auction that was held on Saturday, Jan. 11.

Turner reported the fundraiser, which included a supper, auction, raffle and entertainment, served about 350 people at the Mabel Community Center. The majority of the funds were raised through the estimated 170 auction items that were sold.

"We'd really like to thank all the community of Mabel, the businessmen, the people in the community who donated the auction items...that's very important," he said.

Turner added the Lions wished to thank Traci Ward and Virginia Karlsbroten who did ladies nails, Tiffany Danielson who cut hair, along with the cheerleaders and dance group from Mabel-Canton.

Turner called in a $14,000 pledge to the Eagles Cancer Telethon this past weekend, which supports cancer related research through Mayo Clinic Cancer Research, Hormel Institute for Cancer Research and University of Minnesota Cancer Research.

The remaining $2,500 raised at the fundraiser was sent to Fillmore County Cancer-Patient Services. "That money goes into a fund and anyone who is diagnosed with cancer we turn in their name to that organization - and they send them $100 to cover gas, expenses, missing work...it sure helps when they are first diagnosed that they can get a little boost like that," Turner said.

The Lions raised about $1,150 by selling 500 raffle tickets for a 39-inch flat screen television. The winner of the television was Gerald Peter of Mabel. Winners of the three $50 cash drawings for the meal tickets were Kayla Nelson of Mabel, Lonnie Peirce of Burr Oak and Barb Nelson of Mabel.
