Mabel residents finding same-day care at local clinic
Wednesday, September 18, 2013 3:26 AM
Nichole Halverson, at right, turned to Winneshiek Medical Center’s Mabel Clinic for care when she returned from her honeymoon feeling ill. Kirsten Wyffels, DNP, of Mabel provided her with the care she needed. WINNESHIEK MEDICAL CENTER
Nichole Halverson returned from her honeymoon in the Dominican Republic only to find herself feeling ill. She called the Mabel Clinic for an appointment.
"I thought of Kirsten right away, and got an appointment with her for that very morning!" she said.
Kirsten Wyffels, a doctor of nursing practice (DNP), joined Winneshiek Medical Center's Mabel Clinic in early July to provide daily expanded hours for the people in the Hesper and Mabel area, as well as Spring Grove and southern Fillmore County residents.
Along with Kathy Petersburg, ARNP, Wyffels provides family medicine services such as well child exams, athletic physicals, well-woman exams, care for chronic illness, immunizations, wellness labs, strep tests and offers same day appointments for illness.
Medical direction for Winneshiek Medical Center is provided by Mayo Clinic Health System.
"Kirsten sat down with me and asked lots of questions to fully understand me and my health history," Halverson added. "She took time to get to know me to uncover what could be causing my illness."
Before she left her appointment, Halverson was able to get the necessary lab work done right in Mabel. "Kirsten told me she would call with the results. What I didn't expect was for her to call three times in between to check on how I was doing," Halverson continued.
"Being from Mabel myself, I view my patients as my 'people' and I want to take care of them," Wyffels explained. "If someone is sick, we will get them seen and they will be treated like family."
The family concept shined through for Halverson. She said, "Kirsten said I should run down to her house to get some Gatorade if I didn't have any at home, and she even helped me understand my insurance. I've never felt so cared for by a health care provider."
Halverson added, "Kirsten will be my health care provider from now on. She goes out of her way, and above and beyond, to make sure you are taken care of."
The Mabel Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 pm. Call (507) 493-5115 to schedule an appointment.

According to The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, nearly 40 percent of the state’s waterways are polluted with much of it coming from field run off. Do you believe there should be more regulations to prevent this growing issue?
