Mabel to host bloodmobile next Thursday
Wednesday, October 03, 2012 5:31 AM
The Mabel Community Blood Drive will be held once again at the Mabel Legion on Thursday, Oct. 11, from 2 to 7 p.m.
October is National Liver Awareness Month and the American Red Cross encourages people across the country to focus on liver health. Recently, two patients at a hospital served by the Red Cross Mid-America Blood Services Division underwent liver transplants and received more than 130 units of red blood cells.
Liver transplant patients often require large amounts of blood transfusions during surgery. Thanks to dedicated blood donors, the Red Cross was able to meet the needs of these two patients and countless others.
Liver transplants are the second most common transplant, following kidney transplants.
To donate blood in Mabel, call Bev Williams at (507) 493-5284 or 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information.
All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and others 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
