Gesina J. Brueggeman, 95, of Peterson, formerly of Wykoff, died Dec. 19, 2013, at her home in Peterson.
Gesina Jeanette Simonson was born at rural Kiester, Minn., on May 16, 1918, the daughter of John and Martha (Johnson) Simonson. She went to a country school through eighth grade and briefly attended high school at Thompson, Iowa, before extended illness forced her to drop out. As a young girl, she drove a horse-drawn cart to catechism classes at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Kiester, which is where she first met her future husband, Gordon Cox.
She and Gordon Cox were married on Nov. 4, 1939, at Mason City, Iowa. They farmed in the Kiester and Clarks Grove areas before moving to Wykoff in 1953. Her husband was a farmer/rancher who primarily raised Hereford cattle and horses. She worked on the farm, as well, and eventually got back into the restaurant business. She operated the Corner Café in Wykoff during the 1960s and later was offered a job at the First State Bank of Wykoff, where she worked until retirement.
Mr. Cox died on May 26, 1971. On Sept. 17, 1972, she married Floyd Brueggeman in Wykoff. She was happily married for more than 30 years to each of her two husbands. Mr. Brueggeman died on Jan. 29, 2008.
She enjoyed handcrafts and turned out beautiful items, including knitted sweaters, afghans, crocheted tablecloths and many quilts. She took up golfing late in life with her friend, Opal, and for several years they also had a booth at Art in the Park in Lanesboro, where they sold embroidered dish towels and pillow cases, crocheted work and hand-painted Christmas ornaments.
She was a humble and gentle person, always ready to help a neighbor.
Survivors include a son, Marlyn (Jundong Song) Cox of Winnipeg and Peterson; a daughter, Sylvia (Jeff) Passow of Peterson; granddaughters, Sarah (Roger) Bearbower of Rushford and Anna (Bruce) Nelson of Wykoff; grandsons, DeLane Horning of Peterson and Greg (Shannon) Cox of Aurora, Colo.; and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; a son, Dennis Cox; three sisters and six brothers; and an infant grandson.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 26, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wykoff with the Rev. Becky Timm officiating. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9 a.m., until the time of service. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kiester.
The family suggests memorials be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran Church.
