Mabel-Canton scored on every opportunity during the first half of Friday's match-up at LeRoy-Ostrander, taking a 34-0 lead into the locker room before cruising to a 47-22 win.
The M-C offense had no turnovers and scored on its first six possessions before two penalties and a fumble led to the Cougars' only punt. Mostly M-C reserves finally ran out of downs at the Cardinal 19-yard line late in the game.
Remarkably, the teams combined for only one three-and-out possession, but the Cougars (2-3, 2-2- SEC) were able to sustain drives while the Cardinals (2-3, 1-3 SEC) were not. M-C converted its first six third-downs and finished seven for 11.
The Cougars had impressive scoring marches of 63, 60, 87, 72, 73 and 54 yards. L-O's two long drives of 80 and 81 yards came long after the outcome had been determined.
Hunter Johnson also ran back an interception 30 yards to make it 41-0, two plays into the second half. The senior running back ended up with 173 rushing yards. Sophomore Mitch Kuhn ran up a career-high 117 yards and Noah Manning gained 100 yards, helping M-C total 422 yards on the ground.
In addition to his interception touchdown, Johnson scored on runs of 10, four and two yards as well as kicking five extra points.
Manning scored on seven- and one-yard runs and on defense had the other M-C interception.
Cougar quarterback Collin O'Bieglo threw only six passes, completing four. His first toss resulted in a 22-yard scoring play after receiver Donnie Lind broke a tackle while running down the sideline.
O'Bieglo's second pass went for 33 yards, a Keyser Wenthold reception that set up touchdown number five.
The 63 passing yards helped the Cougars out-gain L-O overall 485 yards to 370.
While M-C was effective while mostly running and occasionally passing, the Cardinals relied mainly on their aerial attack. Several of only 20 Cardinal runs were quarterback scrambles as Jace Bunne rushed 11 times for a team-high 85 yards. Bunne also threw 37 times, netting 253 yards. Intercepted twice, the junior completed 17 passes including all three Cardinal touchdown plays. One went 14 yards to Nate Bunne, a second gained three yards to Sam Roe, while the third was for seven yards to Zach Royston. Royston totaled 10 pass receptions for 145 yards.
With a 16-man roster, L-O is not playing B-team games this season.
The SG/M-C/NW junior high boys improved to 6-0 with a 38-20 win at Lansing Kee and a 51-0 victory at Glenville-Emmons. The seventh graders won at Dover-Eyota 22-12.
