The week of Dec. 10 was perfect for the girls from Mabel-Canton, which defeated both of their SEC basketball rivals.
Mabel-Canton vs. Schaeffer Academy
On Dec. 11, the Cougars handed the SA Lions a 49-38 defeat.
Double-double honors went to Sara Lind, who led M-C with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lind also has 2 assists, 2 steals, and two blocked shots. Christy Welscher also shared double-column kudus, scoring 14 points while snagging 10 boards; she also contributed 2 blocks, 2 steals, and an assist. Lydia Geving came close to a double-double, scoring 9 points while hauling in 9 rebounds. She had 4 steals and 3 assists. Carly McCabe dished 6 assists, grabbed 5 rebounds, 4 steals and scored 5 points. Coranda Vickerman scored 6 points, passed for 2 assists and had a rebound.
After a slow start, M-C was able to move the ball around against the SA 2-3 zone, coach Adam Wilder said. That opened up some shots. The Cougars held a 14 point margin at the half, and maintained a 9-11 point edge in the second period in spite of some scrappy competition from the Lions.
For SA, Melanie Murphy led with 17 points.
Mabel-Canton vs. Glenville-Emmons
The Cougars hosted G-E on Dec. 14, soundly defeating the Wolverines 61-25.
"We started flat in the first half and it really took us awhile to get going again against their zone," Wilder reported. Even so, the Cougars again enjoyed a 14 point lead at the half.
"Glenville came out in a different zone in the second half and we were able to have more success against it. Towards the middle of the second half we went on about a 12-0 run to blow the game open," Wilder added.
Welscher led the Cougars with a double-double 18 points, 10 rebounds. McCabe had 11 points. Geving had 7 points and 4 assists. Vickerman scored 8 points, while Danielle Paul added 6. Lind chipped in 5 points.
For the Wolverines, Jaclyn Weitzel, Jaden Rasmussen, and Bre Lundmark each scored 7 points.
Mabel-Canton defeated Riceville on Dec. 17 by a score of 45-37. Look for a complete report in next week's News-Record. On Thursday, Dec. 20, they were scheduled to travel to La Crescent to play the Lancers of the Hiawatha Valley Conference.
