The Mabel-Canton girls basketball team will feature some familiar faces this season. With only one senior lost from last year, the Cougars return 10 letter-winners.
"Experience is our number one strength," head coach Adam Wilder said last week. "Many of the girls have had two plus years of varsity experience. Height would also be one of the advantages that we will have going into the year."
Concerns include controlling the ball but the Cougars are working hard on that facet of the game, Wilder added.
In his first season as head coach of the girls' varsity, Wilder spent the last three years coaching the boys' B team at M-C.
Senior forward Christy Welscher was named to the All-SEC team last season. At 5'10", she averaged 8.2 points per game and 8.4 rebounds. She'll be joined in the starting rotation by junior guard Lydia Geving, who won honorable mention on the all-conference list. Geving stands 5'7" and also saw plenty of play time last year, averaging 7.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.6 assists per game.
Five-foot, six, junior Carly McCabe checks in at starting guard. She recorded 5.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.2 steals per contest last season. Junior Sara Lind (5'11") starts at forward. She scored 3.9 points and grabbed 4.4 rebounds per game. Senior Amanda Rasmussen is also listed as a starting forward. She's 5'10" and snagged 4.6 rebounds, 2.9 points per outing.
Other leading candidates for some time on the hardwood floor include senior guard Danielle Paul (5'6"), juniors Abby Hanson (guard, 5'10"), Chelsey Busch (guard 5'5"), sophomore Hannah Nolte (forward, 5'8"), and eighth graders Coranda Vickerman (guard, 5'7"), and Courtney Graves (forward, 5'9").
Wilder said the Cougars are looking to improve on a 6-21 record last year and move up from the bottom of the SEC, with a good shot at second or third in the conference by the end of the season. Spring Grove has to be the preseason favorite in both conference and section play, he added.
Play begins on Tuesday, Nov. 27, with an opening tip-off date at Lanesboro. Spring Grove will visit Mabel-Canton on Nov. 30.
