The Mabel-Canton girls basketball team traveled to Lyle on Monday, Dec. 9, then played at home the following night.

Unfortunately for M-C, the Athletics defended their home court with effective defensive pressure, winning 76-33.

Senior Carly McCabe led the Cougars with 14 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Lydia Geving added five points, two rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Junior Danielle Graves and freshman Courtney Graves had three points each.

Senior Abby Hanson contributed six rebounds and two points.

Sara Lind had five boards, two points and an assist.

Junior Hannah Nolte had two points and two rebounds.

Freshman Coranda Vickerman scored two points and dished out three assists and grabbed a steal.

Lyle-Pacelli wouldn't be caught after closing the first half on a 22-5 run, leading 44-23 at the break.

M-C hit 10 of 24 free throw attempts (42 percent), while the A's hit 15 of 19 from the charity stripe (78 percent).

L-P had 19 turnovers on the night while M-C totaled 25.

L-P forward Sarah Holtz scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Guards Brooke Walter and Courtney Walter had 14 points each, while Ann Rysavy added 11.

Mabel-Canton vs. La Crescent

The Cougars were defeated again the following evening in Mabel when their Hiawatha Valley opponent La Crescent came to town on Tuesday, Dec. 10. The Lancers are a AA program.

The talented and experienced team (seven seniors and four juniors on the varsity roster) from La Crescent led 22-4 at the half and cruised to a 43-18 victory.

Lind finished with 10 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal.

Geving had four points, four rebounds, a steal and a block.

Abby Hanson had five rebounds off the defensive glass.

Vickerman had three rebounds, two points, two steals and a blocked shot.

Guard Jen Michalke scored 10 for the Lancers. Forward Katie Waller poured in nine and guard Liza Timm added six. All three are senior class members.

Up next:

M-C hosted Houston on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Three days later, on Friday, Dec. 20, LeRoy-Ostrander visits Mabel. The Cougars will compete in the Winona State Holiday Tourney on Dec. 26 and 28.
