The Cougar baseball squad lost both games of a doubleheader with Lyle/Pacelli on April 30. The following afternoon, M-C hosted Schaeffer Academy. The Cougars were in that game until the last pitch, but came up short of a win. A doubleheader with Houston that was set for Thursday, May 2, was postponed due to weather.

M-C 000 001 0 - 1 4 4
The Athletics topped their hosts 6-1 in the opener, as the Cougars went without a hit for the first four innings before scoring in the sixth. Hunter Johnson then singled, stole second base and came home on an RBI single by Wesley Richert.
Back-to-back hits by Jon Selness and Keyser Wenthold had put two Cougars on base with one out in the fifth inning. Unfortunately for home fans, a double play ended the frame.
Kevin Juenger pitched a complete game for the Athletics, striking out 7 and walking only 2 while allowing 4 hits. Collin O'Bieglo was on the mound for M-C, relieved in the final inning by Johnson.
L/P banged out 10 hits, 2 each from young all-conference duo freshman Daniel Bollingberg and sophomore Jordan Hart as well as another 2 hits from honorable mention all-conference senior Ryan McConnell. Nine different Athletics were credited with RBIs.
L/P played without an error while taking advantage of 4 M-C miscues. But the Cougars also turned two double plays of their own.

A Cougar four-run rally chased L/P starter Ryan McConnell in the fourth inning and made it a one-run game. Lyle/Pacelli then put the game away in the last two frames with 8 late runs aided by 6 late M-C errors. The final was 13-5.
Four different Cougar pitchers could not slow the L/P offense, which blasted 11 hits including four doubles. Freshman Jordan Cotter went 3 for 4 with one of those 2-baggers.
Four of the 7 Cougars hits came in the fourth-inning rally including a 2-RBI double from Selness.
Selness and freshman Tannor Fairchild each hit 2 for 3. The other 3 M-C hits came from O'Bieglo, Wenthold and Noah Manning.
The fourth-inning Cougar comeback was in full force with one on base and no outs before Hart went onto the mound to quench the rally and earn the pitching win.
The Athletics committed only one error (their only error of the day during 14 innings) while there were 7 M-C mistakes in the field.
Richert had the defensive gem of the game, retreating at shortstop to grab a fly ball in shallow left field.
L/P, the defending SEC champions, improved to 2-1 (2-0 SEC) while the Cougars remained winless after seven games.

M-C vs. Schaeffer Academy
SA 240 001 2 - 9 10 2
M-C 100 301 2 - 7 8 4
The Cougars matched a season-high 7 runs, enjoyed a season-low 3 strikeouts, but still came up two runs short of Schaeffer Academy for the second time in five days. In contention until the very end, M-C fans were disappointed when a last-inning two-run rally fell short.
M-C fell behind in the first inning and would not catch up. Down 6-1 in the third, the Cougars' first rally trotted in three runs set up by singles from Jon Selness and Mitch Kuhn and followed by a 2-RBI triple from Hunter Johnson. A sacrifice bunt by Keyser Wenthold brought Johnson home, and M-C was back in the game, 6-4.
The Lions were poised to break the game open in the fifth with the bases loaded and only one out. That's when M-C relief pitcher Wesley Richert retired the next two batters and no runs scored.
Two late Cougar errors allowed SA to score three unearned runs as the teams traded runs until the finish... with SA still up by two.
The previous week, the Lions had won a 2-0 pitchers' duel; but batters fared better in this 16-run rematch. Seven Cougars and six Lions had base hits, but four Schaeffer batters had 2 hits as the Lions out-hit M-C 10 to 8. The Cougars' only statistical advantage: a 3-to-1 edge in extra-base hits.
Noah Manning batted 2 for 3 including a double, the lone Cougar with multiple hits. Justin Ward had a first-inning single, and Donnie Lind doubled in the sixth.
Richert was impressive in five innings of relief. He totaled 9 strike outs, 2 walks, no earned runs.
With three returning all-conference players plus an honorable mention, SA remained atop the conference standings at 4-0 (4-0 SEC) while the Cougars dropped to 0-8 (0-4 SEC).
