Wednesday, January 16, 2013 8:19 AM
The losing streak for the Fillmore Central boys basketball team has reached eight, after dropping games to three of the top four teams in the Three Rivers Conference: Rushford-Peterson (40-57), Caledonia (39-61) and Plainview-Elgin-Millville (50-81). Those three teams have a combined record of 26-10, while the Falcons fall to 2-10, overall, 1-8 in the Three Rivers Conference.
Senior Andrew Coyle led the team with 11 points against Rushford-Peterson. Coyle was a perfect five for five from the field against the Trojans. Dan Gatzke and Nick Powell each had eight points in the loss. Gatzke (8) and Powell (7) were the leading rebounders, while junior Logan Masters dished out a team high four assists.
As a team, FC hit 48.5 percent (16/33) from the field, but only had 33 shots. Part of the problem for the Falcons is the turnovers...24 against RP. The team hit a cool six of 12 from the line.
In the loss to Caledonia, some of the same problems from the RP game plagued the Falcons against the Warriors...lack of shots, turnovers and free throws. The team hit 15 of 33 (45.5 percent) from the field, but only six of 16 (37.5 percent) from the line and turned the ball over a season high 35 times.
Dan Gatzke did his part for the team, connecting on eight of 11 shots and finished the night with 20 points. Nick Powell contributed seven points and Jacob Tammel added six (two three-pointers). Solo baskets were recorded by Carter Rindels, Quentin Case and Andrew Coyle.
Rebound leaders were Gatzke and Powell, each with nine. Tammel pulled down six boards. Logan Masters dished out five assists, while Nick Powell had three take-aways.
Nick Powell got his shooting eye back against PEM, hitting seven of 12 shots and a team high 15 points. Dan Gatzke (8) and Jacob Tammel (7) were next in line in the scoring column for Fillmore Central. Also scoring for the Falcons were Carter Rindels (3), Logan Masters (3), Brandon Breitsprecher (4), Michael Walsh (5) and Andrew Coyle (5). Rindels, Breitsprecher and Walsh came off the bench to do their scoring. Tammel was the leading rebounder with nine. Breitsprecher led the team with four assists.
Tuesday night the guys traveled to St. Charles and Friday night they host Kingsland. Monday the team will travel to Spring Grove for a non-conference game and next Tuesday they will host Chatfield.
