The fifth seeded Fillmore Central/Lanesboro baseball team started the post-season with a 12-6 win over Mabel-Canton and finished the 1A East Sub-section tournament, and their 2014 season, with a 12-2 (five inning) loss to Chatfield.

In between the win and loss was a loss to top seed Wabasha-Kellogg, 11-0 (five innings). The Falcons, who had a 3-12 regular season record, finished the 2014 campaign with a 4-14 record.

Mabel-Canton win

The FC/L baseball team got into the double-elimination part of the 1A East Sub-section tournament, with a convincing 12-6 win over fourth seeded Mabel-Canton last Thursday. The Falcons scored 12 runs, on 12 hits, while committing three errors.

Josh Jones was on the mound for the entire seven innings. He walked four and struck out eight. Four of the six runs were earned.

Nick Mensink and Collin Scott led the hitting department, each going three for three in the game. Mensink scored three runs and had one RBI, Scott scored one run and knocked in five. Kiel Larson also had a multiple-hit game, going two for five, with two runs scored. Getting solo hits were Garrett Boggs, Andy Love, Nick Powell, and Clay Olson. Two of Mensink's hits were doubles and one of Scott's hits was a two-bagger.

With the win, Fillmore Central/Lanesboro advanced to the double-elimination portion of the tournament, and a shot at No. 1 Wabasha-Kellogg.

Lose to Wabasha-Kellogg

Fillmore Central/Lanesboro only had two base runners in the five inning loss to the northern Falcons. Larson reached on an error in the fourth inning and Olson broke up the no-hitter in the fifth inning with a one-out double. Only 16 southern Falcons went to the plate in the semi-final game.

Mensink (three-and-two-thirds innings) and Sam Peters (one-third inning) did the pitching for FC/L. Mensink struck out two, walked three and gave up 13 hits in his stint on the mound. Peters was perfect.

Season ends vs. Chatfield

The offense was lacking again against the Chatfield Gophers as the season came to an abrupt halt last Saturday. The locals could only come up with four hits and two runs in the five inning loss, while giving up 12 runs and 12 hits.

Getting the hits for FC/L were Love, Larson, Mensink and Scott. Scoring the runs were Love and Larson. Mensink had the only RBI for the team. Larson scored his run on a Chatfield error.

On the mound were Gatlin Woellert (three innings), Cole Schwichtenberg (one inning) and Kirby O'Connor. Woellert gave up 10 runs, 11 hits, five walks and struck out one. Schwichtenberg gave up two runs, two hits and one walk, while striking out one. O'Connor faced one Chatfield batter and gave up one hit.

With the loss, also came the end of the 2014 season. Seven seniors ended their Falcon baseball careers: Olson, Powell, O'Connor, Boggs, Love, Josh Jones and Collin Bennett. Team recognition awards will follow in a future issue.
