Cold weather postponed a Jan. 7 game with Lanesboro, but the Cougars tangled with the Schaeffer Academy Lions three nights later in Rochester.

That Friday game was a good one for fans of both schools. After four first-period lead changes and two tie scores, M-C took a 29-26 lead into the locker room. The Cougars went on to win, 55-51.

Justin Ward led Mabel-Canton with the double double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He also passed for four assists, stole the ball twice, and got a hand on five SA passes.

Other top scorers for M-C included Hunter Johnson, who chimed in with nine points. Noah Manning scored eight, Donnie Lind six, and Wayne Ross five.

Lind snagged eight boards and lifted three steals. But Manning was steal leader, with six. He also had five rebounds and three assists.

M-C out-rebounded SA 36-30. More importantly, the Cougars forced 31 turnovers while only giving up 19. The end result of all those empty possessions was a 61-37 edge in field goal tries for the visitors. It was a handicap that the Lions couldn't overcome.

Schaeffer got the margin down to one point on three occasions during the first eight minutes of the second half, but couldn't quite catch the Cougars.

A triple by sophomore guard Mitch Kuhn with 7:45 left to play kick-started a 9-0 M-C run that featured a put-back by Lind and a pair of buckets by Manning. It produced a 10-point lead that would come in mighty handy. SA cut the margin to three on a trey by Roman Lahr as the clock ticked down below 1:00, but M-C held on. Junior guard Keyser Wenthold hit the last point of the night from the line, putting the score beyond one shot as time expired.

Lahr got most of his 18 points in the second half. Teammate Zach Sanger lit up the scoreboard with 14. Josh Hanson added seven, while Joe Vaughn scored six.

The LHS game would have occurred at M-C. It was rescheduled for Feb. 3.
