The Cougars' baseball team played the Houston Hurricanes four times last week, twice on the road and twice at home. Both dates were doubleheaders.

Mabel-Canton at Houston, May 13

Game 1

M-C 000 00 - 0 2 1

Hou 002 17 -10 10 0

It did not appear to be a 10-run rule game as Houston entered the bottom of the fifth with a 3-0 lead, since the first two Hurricane batters in that inning grounded out. Those would be the last outs of the game. The next seven Houston batters scored to end the game with the 10-run rule. It ended when Mason Drake was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Taylor Johnston tossed a 2-hitter for Houston.

Wesley Richert walked in the second inning and reached third base after Donnie Lind was hit by a pitch followed by a ground out. But the threat ended when Dylan Lee made a great catch for Houston in left field.

Keyser Wenthold singled in the Cougar third but was the first casualty in an inning-ending double play.

Lind singled Richert (walk) over to third base again in the fourth, but Johnston preserved the shutout by retiring the next two Cougars with ground outs. It was the first win of the season for the 'Canes who had fallen to M-C three days previous at the Stewartville Tournament

Hou 102 200 x - 5 9 2

Like the first game, Houston never trailed. In the nightcap, however, it was M-C that made a late charge. The Cougars came up one run short. The potential tying run was on base when the game ended, cutting short the M-C comeback.

Houston scored the first five runs; M-C scored the final four.

Noah Manning hit 2 for 4 and scored the final run. Collin O'Bieglo batted 1 for 2, a single coming with two out in the final seventh inning.

Hurricane hurler Mason Drake struck out 9 batters and was in control until the Cougars first averted the shutout and then began to challenge for the lead in the last three innings.

Lee, the first Houston batter of the game, hit one over the left field fence and later added a double while batting 2 for 3.

The 'Canes escaped the conference cellar, improving to 2-7 (2-4 SEC) while M-C slipped to 2-11 (1-6 SEC)

Game 1

Hou 304 110 0 - 9 12 3

M-C 020 022 0 - 6 12 2

Each team tagged 12 hits, but M-C left a dozen runners on base while Houston left half that many. Three of the first 4 Houston batters scored, and the Cougars played from behind thereafter.

Three Cougar hits produced 2 runs in the second frame, and M-C was within one run at 3-2, but Hurricanes had half of their hits in the next inning to extend their lead to 7-2.

M-C added 2 more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the final seventh inning, a line drive out ended the game with two Cougars on base.

Wesley Richert, Keyser Wenthold and Jon Selness each had two hits for M-C. Justin Ward had the only extra-base hit with a sixth-inning double.

Batting in the eighth position, Brett Hoskins went 3 for 4 for Houston.

Game 2

Hou 020 200 001 - 5 12 2

M-C 200 001 102 - 6 14 5

In an extra inning marathon, Wenthold drove in Donnie Lind for the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the tenth. O'Bieglo had scored the tying run when Houston went for Lind stealing second base.

A single by Tannor Fairchild and a walk issued to Mac Nelson loaded the bases with two out to set up Wenthold's winning blow. They could not have played another inning due to darkness

Both pitchers went the distance through three extra innings. Houston's Tyler Hoskins fanned 4, walked 4 and hit 2 batters.

For M-C, Richert struck out 8 and walked 3 to earn the pitching win. He also batted 3 for 5 with a double and 2 runs batted in. Wenthold and Lind also each went 3 for 5 at the plate.

The first 2 M-C batters scored for an early 2-0 lead, but the Cougars would add only 2 more runs during the next 8 innings.

Meanwhile, Houston tied it with 2 runs in the second inning, then went ahead with 2 more in the fourth (4-2).

Richert doubled and later scored on a Lind hit to get M-C back within one run (4-3) in the sixth

Down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh, Richert drove in Wenthold to tie the score at 4-4 and send the game into extra innings. Houston took advantage of 2 errors to break the tie in the top of the 10th.

It was the fifth game in a week between the two teams, with M-C (3-12) taking the first and the last with Houston (3-9) winning the middle three.

The Cougars lost a close one to Schaeffer Academy (8-7) as this issue went to press. Look for details in next week's News-Record. They were scheduled to make up a doubleheader with Lyle-Pacelli on May 21, then take on No. 1 seeded Wabasha-Kellogg on May 23 in the opening round of subsection play.
