The M-C boys finished their regular season schedule last week with one non-conference and one SEC game. Subsection play began on Tuesday, Feb. 26.
Hunter Johnson faces an opponent under the basket during last Friday night's game against Houston.
Mabel-Canton at St. Charles
Feb. 18 was an away date for the Cougars, who took on the Class AA Saints of the TRC North. The home team prevailed, 78-46.
Saint Charles led 37-19 at the half, and outscored M-C 41-27 in the second period.
With a turnover margin of 16-9, the Saints got in 62 field goal attempts to 48 for the Cougars. They took advantage of those opportunities to score on 60 percent of their two-point tries, compared to 40 percent for M-C. St. Charles also pushed to ball to the basket enough to draw more shooting fouls. They made 18 trips to the charity stripe while M-C only got 7. That resulted in 11 free throws for St. Charles while Mabel-Canton settled for 4.
Rebounding favored the taller Saints, 37-23.
Hunter Johnson and Collin O'Bieglo had 10 points apiece for the Cougars. Justin Ward scored 8, while Noah Manning and Wes Richert had a half-dozen each. Dustin Kerns, Donnie Lind, and Keyser Wenthold scored 2 points each.
Johnson led M-C rebounders with 6. Lind had 5, while Ward and Wenthold had 3 each. Manning and O'Bieglo grabbed 2 each.
The Saints blocked 4 shots, while M-C blocked 1.
For the Saints, senior center Aaron Leistikow (6-2") finished with 22, which was right on track with his 23.2 point per game average. Senior guard Chase Busian had 11, which was also in line with his average of 10.9 per game.
Mabel-Canton versus Houston
M-C won the last regular-season game on Friday, 62-36.
Cougar shooters missed their first 6 tries versus the Hurricanes, but soon recovered to take a 30-15 advantage into the locker room. One of the secrets of their early success was taking care of the basketball. M-C only had three turnovers in the first period of play. Another perk for the home team occurred when Johnson closed out the first half with back-to-back treys.
Team stats for the entire contest showed a 47 percent to 36 percent advantage for the Cougars from two-point range. Another telling total was 22 turnovers for Houston and only 12 for M-C. Rebounds were a draw, with each team snagging 39. M-C passed for 21 assists while the Hurricanes only had 8.
Johnson led Cougar scorers with 16 points. O'Bieglo (10) and Ward (14) were also in double figures.
Ward managed a double-double by grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. O'Bieglo had 9 boards, while Manning had 7. Johnson grabbed 6 off the glass.
Ten Cougars saw action, which is a bonus going into post-season play.
Starters Manning (8 points) and Logan Henry (4 points) were joined by Richert and Kerns, who had three points each. Jon Selness scored 2 points and blocked 2 shots. Wenthold scored 2 points, grabbed 2 rebounds, and passed for a team-high 7 assists with only 2 turnovers. Mitch Kuhn came in long enough to lift a steal and pass for 2 assists with no turnovers.
The Hurricanes were led by junior forward Mason Drake with 9 points and junior guard Nick Schneider with 6.

M-C will begin subsection play on Tuesday in Mabel. With a No. 7 seeding, the Cougars open with a rematch versus No. 10 Houston. Two nights later the quarterfinal round will match the winner of that game against the Burros in Lanesboro, who are seeded No. 2.
