The M-C girls' basketball team traveled to LeRoy-Ostrander on Dec. 7, scoring a decisive 62-34 victory over the Cardinals.
L-O senior guard Jessica Jennings broke the ice with the first bucket of the night (a trey), and the Cards' led 5-2 early on. That's when the Cougars literally began to hit on all cylinders. M-C moved the ball around against the L-O two-three zone, reeling off 15 straight points during a 28-5 run to take a 32-12 lead into the locker room. L-O later went to a man-to-man defense, but didn't slow the Cougars. Attempting to play catch-up, the Cardinals pushed the ball up-tempo in the second period but the basket had a lid nailed over it for L-O shooters.
M-C had three players in double figures. Sara Lind scored 22 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Christy Welscher hit for 13 points, snagged 11 rebounds and had 4 blocks. Lydia Geving added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Carly McCabe had 4 points, 4 steals and 4 assists. Eighth-grade starter Coranda Vickerman had 3 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Amanda Rasmussen chipped in 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Danielle Paul scored 32 points, had 3 rebounds and 3 assists.
"Defensively, this was our strongest performance so far of the year," coach Adam Wilder said. "The girls all played well on the defensive end and Danielle Paul and Amanda Rasmussen played huge minutes when we got into foul trouble early. We also rebounded the ball very well as a team."
For the Cardinals, Jennings led with 21 points, including four baskets from beyond the arc.
The Cougars hit 13 of 24 free-throws, while L-O had to settle for 4 of 15. Total rebounds also went to the visitors, who enjoyed a 55-37 edge in that department. The turnover tussle went to L-O, 12-20.
Lind was named the KFIL Player of the Game for M-C, while Jennings won the honor for L-O. The KFIL game ball award went to Geving.
M-C moved to 2-1 on the year with the win. L-O fell to 0-6. The Cougars were to host Schaeffer Academy on Tuesday. Friday, Glenville-Emmons visits Mabel. On Monday, Dec. 17, the team travels to Riceville.
