Mabel-Canton wins East/West conference showcase game

Mabel-Canton traveled to the home of Southeast Conference (SEC) West champion Lyle/Pacelli on Tuesday, Oct. 15, as the SEC East representative in the annual East/West Showcase match. The Cougars finished the regular season at 31-2 overall with a 3-1 victory over the Athletics, 25-12, 22-25, 25-15, 25-15.
M-C coach Lonnie Morken said the match no longer qualifies as a conference championship, but is still an honor to play in. "I am glad we were able to play in it, otherwise we would've had two full weeks off from the end of the regular season until playoffs started," he noted.
Dropping the second set to the Athletics may have been just the type of tough competition the Cougars needed as they prepare for post-season play, Morken added. The 22-25 frame was similar to a pair of close sets won versus Houston and Spring Grove.
"We had many more errors than we typically do and the opposition played well," Morken said. "Overall it was a good game for us because the girls felt what losing a set feels like and we were able to respond. In the second set we had six of our 11 service misses and six of our 14 hitting errors...
"Our statistics look fine as far as our service aces, kills, serving and hitting percentages, but we clumped our errors together and against good teams you can't do that. We talked about moving our feet and playing with more focus once playoffs start. We have had another successful regular season and would like to make a deep run in the playoffs."
The Cougars' only regular-season losses occurred during the Burnsville Showcase tourney when their entire senior front line had to be absent for academic testing. Mabel-Canton has been ranked fifth, sixth or seventh in state polls all season.
During the showcase game, Belle Sand had 16 kills, 14 digs, four aces and an assist. Sara Lind had 14 kills four and one-half ace blocks, three digs. Lydia Geving had 13 kills, eight digs, six ace serves and an assist. Carly McCabe had three kills, 41 assists, four aces and 12 digs. Coranda Vickerman had eight digs, two assists and five aces. Christine Lee had six digs and two aces. Sara Vettleson-Trutza had three kills and two aces. Courtney Graves had two aces and two digs.
Lyle/Pacelli finished the regular season 14-11. The Athletics were led by Sara Holtz with 15 kills and 12 digs. Courtney Walter contributed 12 kills and 12 digs. Madison Truckenmiller had six kills, 11 digs and two aces. Bethany Strouf had five kills. Zoe Lester had three aces and Brooke Walter contributed six assists.
Mabel-Canton takes a number two seed into the 1A East sub-section tournament this week. At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, the Cougars will host the winner of the Houston and Kingsland match, which was played on Tuesday evening. The next round moves to the Mayo Civic Center on Saturday, Oct. 26.
