Community supports class with local scholarships

The Mabel-Canton School District will be holding graduation ceremonies for its seniors on Friday, May 31, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. The school administration announced that Kristina Mengis has earned the honor of valedictorian and Christy Welscher is the salutatorian. Both will speak at the commencement on Friday.
Members of the Mabel-Canton class of 2013 were honored on May 19 with a special scholarship awards program at the high school. These students will be honored once again on Friday evening as they graduate from Mabel-Canton.
Honor students will also be recognized. In addition to Mengis and Welscher, they are Ashley Dahl, Stephanie Hafner, Logan Henry, Kayla Phillips and Morgan Roppe.
The class has chosen their motto to be, "Life brings us tears, smiles and memories - the tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories last forever."
Class colors are royal blue, red and silver and the class flower is a royal blue calla lily.
The class of 2013 was honored on Sunday evening, May 19, at a scholarship presentation ceremony followed by a baccalaureate at the St. Olaf Catholic Church. During the scholarship awards, over $21,250 was presented to the following students.
Kaylor Aasum received the Bank of the West and Ellestad scholarships.
Ashley Dahl was awarded the Mabel Lions, Lance Haakenstad/Wells Fargo and Ellestad scholarships.
Tylor Fairchild received the Mabel Telephone Company and Ellestad scholarships.
Alexa Guber received the Ellestad scholarship.
Stephanie Hafner was awarded the Mabel and M-C High School Alumni, Spencer Yohe, Brenna Family Scholarship, Mabel-Canton Education Association, Upper Iowa University Presidential and Ellestad scholarships.
Logan Henry received the Cohrs Brothers, Katie Wiltgen Memorial, AAA, Mike Aske Memorial, Tri-County Electric, Wayne Vatland Memorial, Army Reserve Scholar Athlete, Mabel American Legion Post 299 and Ellestad scholarships.
Kristina Mengis was awarded the Katie Wiltgen Memorial, AAA, KIMT Golden Apple, Mabel Fire Department, RCWRT/Scott Hosier History Scholarship, Mabel and M-C High School Alumni, Knox College Mueller Academic and Music Scholarships, Marilyn Johnson and Ellestad scholarships.
Trent Nelson was awarded the Tuohy Furniture, Mabel Lions, Spencer Yohe, Anthony Williams and Ellestad scholarships.
Danielle Paul received the Ellestad scholarship.
Kayla Phillips earned the Tri-County Electric, Brenna Family Scholarship, Ellestad scholarship and the Above and Beyond Award from the Winona Daily News.
Amanda Rasmussen earned the Mabel American Legion Post 299 and Ellestad scholarships.
Morgan Roppe was awarded the Marilyn Johnson, Society of Women Engineers, Mabel-Canton Education Association, Booster Club, Ellestad scholarship and the University of Wyoming Academic Scholarship.
Katie Schulte was awarded the Ellestad scholarship.
Courtney Smith received the Booster Club, Mabel Fire Department and Ellestad scholarships.
Alyssa Spande received the Ellestad scholarship.
Tyler Stortz received the Farmers Shipping, FFA, and Ellestad scholarships.
Elizabeth Wathier received the Mabel Telephone Company and Ellestad scholarships.
Christy Welscher received the Arlin Falck, Don Lind, Mabel and M-C High School Alumni, Mabel Lions, Marlyn and Olga Dahlen, Tri-County Electric, Anthony Williams and Ellestad scholarships, the KIMT Golden Apple Award and a Winona State Academic Scholarship.
Erin Woods was awarded the Ellestad scholarship.
