Six Mabel-Canton juniors were inducted into the school's National Honor Society (NHS) chapter on Wednesday, May 7, at Mabel First Lutheran Church.

After the meal, senior and NHS member Justin Ward introduced third grade teacher Pam Sande, who was chosen to be the ceremony's speaker.

"We leaned many things from Ms. Sande and from all the elementary teachers," Ward said. "The lessons in elementary (school) helped us succeed in high school - and will guide us in our post-secondary education and in the job world."

During her speech, Sande said that being a part of NHS involves inspiration and the ABCs.

"National Honor Society members have traits that set them apart from the rest. They're cast in that role (and) they exhibit the scholarship, leadership, service and character. Alone, each is a highly valued quality. Together they are awesome," Sande said.

She continued, "With all of those characteristics and all those traits, I came up with some ABCs to help me out. Honor Society consists of academics above and beyond. It's character, drive, determination and effort. It includes fairness, goals and gumption, and being helpful to others. It is your integrity and inspiration on a journey for knowledge and leadership. Having motivation and momentum, showing noteworthy open-minded and persevering qualities. You are someone who is reflective, serving and you strive for success. You have tenacity with an unrelentless will to try. You show versatility, wonderment, excellence and a yearning to learn with pizzazz."

The induction ceremony followed the speech in which juniors Danielle Graves, Hannah Nolte, Stephanie Phillips, Gabrielle Sand, Jon Selness and Sara Vettleson-Trutza were installed as members of the Mabel-Canton National Honor Society. They join senior members Emily Brumm, Abby Hanson, Sara Lind, Belle Sand, Kourtney Coyle and Justin Ward.

"These students do not come here by chance," said Principal Jeff Nolte. "This has not happened in a day or two, or a week or even a year. This is symbolic of how each of these students has approached their entire educational journey. It is also symbolic of the support they have had."

The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character.
