Mabel Lions Club annual auction
and supper set to be held Saturday
Wednesday, January 09, 2013 5:04 AM
This Saturday, Jan. 12, the Mabel Lions will be hosting its 24th annual supper and auction to raise funds for the fight against cancer. Proceeds are donated to support Fillmore County cancer patients and to the Rochester Fraternal Order of Eagles Club, with the funds to stay local, benefiting the Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota and Hormel Cancer Center.
The evening's activities begin at 3 p.m. at the Mabel Community Center with a soup and sandwich supper. The soups, chicken noodle and chili, will be served with hot beef sandwiches. Cost of the meal is $5. Advance tickets are entered into a drawing for three $50 prizes.
The auction, scheduled to follow at 7 p.m., is always a great success. The generous donations of baked goods, crafts and a wide variety of other items are auctioned off by area auctioneers. "Ring men" are present in the crowd to expedite the bidding, so no potential bidders are missed. Area youth help the auctioneers by ferrying items from the tables to the auctioneers and then to the buyers.
Donations for the auction come from many people and organizations, not only from Mabel, but also from other area individuals and groups.
All donations are greatly appreciated and one can contact Joe Nelson at (507) 450-6763, Luke Vatland at (507) 450-0804 or Mike Munroe at (507) 272-4211 if one has an item or items to donate. Donations may also be dropped off at the Legion after 10 a.m. the day of the event.
Lions members and their families give generously of their time and energies to make this event a success. They humbly act as a service organization, minimizing what they do in support of this important cause as well as with their involvement in other community projects.
The final fund raising dollars will be presented at the Eagle's Cancer Telethon, which is being held from Saturday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m., through Sunday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m. The event can be seen on KTTC-TV 10 during its 20-hour broadcast.
