Betty Shumate, 84, once of Harmony

Betty B. Shumate, 84, of Austin, died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Johanna Shores Presbyterian Homes in Arden Hills, Minn.
Betty Meyers was born Sept. 24, 1928, in Granger, the daughter of John and Olive (Leister) Meyers. She grew up in the Granger and Harmony area, graduating from Harmony High School.
She moved to Austin and worked at the Geo A. Hormel Company.
On Jan. 31, 1948, she married Wayne E. Shumate in Austin.
An active member of Fellowship United Methodist Church, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, walking, playing cards and visiting with friends and family.
Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Shumate of Oakdale; a brother, Norman Meyers of Waterloo, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Olive Meyers; her husband, Wayne, in 2009; two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 2, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin, with the Rev. Ted Weidman officiating. Interment was in Osage Cemetery in Osage, Iowa.
Memorials are directed to the Grand Meadow Health Care Center in Grand Meadow.
