Clara Headington, 95, of Mabel, died Sunday morning, Nov. 10, 2013, at The Meadows in Mabel.

Clara Ida Christine Schuttemeier was born March 23, 1918, at home in Union Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Caroline (Meyer) Schuttemeier. She grew up living on a farm with five brothers and told many interesting stories of helping with farm work. She attended rural country school through the eighth grade.

She was united in marriage to Elmer Guy Headington on June 3, 1943, at the St. Luke's Church in Eitzen, Minn.

She worked at the Control Data factory in Spring Grove for a few years, but it was not long before she left that job to continue being a full-time homemaker. She could usually be found in the kitchen and was very well known for her "great" baking skills.

In 1970, she and her husband moved from their rural farm near New Albin back to the Burr Oak area. She was a member of the Burr Oak Lutheran Church and active in the Eunice Circle. She was very fond of making great donations (doughnuts, doilies or embroidered dish towels, pies and more) to the annual church bazaar and took pride in telling how a dozen of her doughnuts sold for around $200!

After her husband died, she went to work in the North Winneshiek School food service.

She moved to The Meadows in Mabel in 2005.

She is survived by one son, Merle (Beverly) Headington of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; five daughters, Lois (Burton) Fruechte and Phyllis (Herbert) Banse of Caledonia, Janice Numedahl of Decorah, Lila (Dr. John) Cangemi of Jacksonville, Fla., and Joyce (Daniel) Nelson of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters-in-law, Brenda Headington and Lynn Headington of Decorah; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, Fremont Schuttemeier of Eitzen; and two sisters-in-law, Lucy Schmitz of Cashton, Wis., and LaVonne Brandt of Frankville, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Guy on June 15, 1975; two sons, Wayne on Nov. 10, 2001, and Lyle on Dec. 16, 2001; a son-in-law, Mark Numedahl on Nov. 6, 2005; a granddaughter, Diana Headington on Nov. 6, 1995; four brothers, Armin (Esther), Walter (Helen), William (Arlene) and Elmer Schuttemeier; her sister, Edna Schuttemeier; and sisters-in-law Evelyn Schuttemeier, Myrtle (Walter) Pfister and Frances (Wayne) Brandt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at Burr Oak Lutheran Church in Burr Oak, Iowa, with the Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in Burr Oak Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah and on Thursday after 10 a.m., one hour before the service at the church.
