Darlene J. Baker, 82, of Mabel, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013, at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care in Spring Grove.

She was born Oct. 22, 1931, in Spring Grove to James and Esther (Nelson) Aasum. She attended the Hesper School in Hesper, Iowa, and graduated from Mabel High School in 1949.

On June 30, 1951, she married Paul Baker in Mabel. They lived in the Prosper and Mabel areas until moving into Mabel in 1988 when she began, and continued, working at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home as a certified nursing assistant.

She enjoyed playing the organ, reading, cats and attending her grandsons' activities.

She survived by a daughter, Gretchen (Kenneth) Anderson of Spring Grove; a son, Darrin of Mabel; two grandsons, Kevin and Brian Anderson of Spring Grove; nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-law, Laura Boice of Decorah and Lorraine Baker of Waterloo, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, on April 14, 2004; two sisters, Jeanette Aasum and Vivian Housker; and a brother, Odell Aasum.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with the Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial followed in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.

Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel assisted the family with arrangements.
