James A. Schultz, 69, of Houston, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Valley View Healthcare and Rehab Center in Houston following a six-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

James was born on Feb. 24, 1943, in Wabasha to Frank and Mariece (Corcoran) Schultz. He was raised in Minnieska.

James graduated from Winona Cotter High School in 1961, Winona State University in 1965, and the University of Minnesota Law School in 1968.

On July 25, 1964, he married Marlene James in Trempealeau, Wis. The couple moved to Houston in 1968, where James worked as an attorney his entire career.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Houston. James served as the mayor of Houston and as a member of the Houston Hoedown Board, Circle A and Triple R Saddle Clubs, SEMSCA, Houston Chamber of Commerce, Minnesota Bar Association and Winona and Houston County Bar associations.

James was instrumental in the creation of the dike system and the bike trail in the Houston area and the Houston Ambulance Service.

He was an active supporter of the Houston Public Schools and was previously a part owner of the Valley High Golf Course. In his spare time, James enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting and all things horse, including riding the trails in the "mountains" of Minnesota.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene; three children - Jackie (Phil) Whitacre and their children, Austen and Devin of Harmony, Pam (Bob) Prenot and their children, Dalton and Justin of Winona, and Tony (Lisa) Schultz and their children, Connor and Brynne of Houston; a brother, Bill (Mary) Schultz, Rollingstone, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Bob (Sheila) James of Texas and John James of Alaska; and by many nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, Ken James.

A funeral mass was held at the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston on Oct. 27. Burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery in Minnieska.
