Marilyn Nelson, 66, of rural Mabel, died after a short battle with cancer on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, at her home.

She was born Aug. 6, 1947, in La Crosse, Wis., to George and Viola Doering. She grew up in Hokah and graduated from the Houston High School in 1965.

On Sept. 7, 1968, she married Mervin Nelson at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Riceford, Minn. They lived on the same farm in Blackhammer Township, Houston County, Minn. She worked for SEMCAC Head Start for 27 years.

She was a member of the Scheie Lutheran Church and WELCA and enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, working on the farm and her grandchildren. She also enjoyed catering for several events in the area.

She is survived by her husband, Mervin of Mabel; four children, Barb (Bill) Shafer of Nora Springs, Iowa, Doug (Angela) of Fredericksburg, Iowa, Kathy Nelson of Bloomington, Minn, and Kevin Nelson of Mabel; five grandchildren, Jacob, Ava and Carly Shafer and Hunter and Abigail Nelson; four sisters, Ann Doering of Spring Grove, Nancy (Jack) Anderegg of Winona, Connie (Keith) Petras of La Crescent and Angela (Robert) Burmester of Mabel; sister-in-law, Reenie Doering of Spring Grove; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, David; infant sister, Lola; and brother, Larry.

Funeral services took place Saturday, Nov. 16, at the Scheie Lutheran Church in rural Mabel with the Rev. Mary Waudby officiating. Interment followed in the Riceford Cemetery.
