Robert Martin Vagts of Harmony, died peacefully at home and surrounded by family on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013.
He was born June 20, 1919, in Albain Township, Howard County, Iowa, to Paul and Marie (Jensen) Vagts. He was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa and confirmed there on May 28, 1933.
On May 27, 1941, he was married to Caroline Michel at her parents' home near Granger, officiated by the Rev. Leo Moench, a personal friend of the groom. The couple began farming east of Cresco. In March of 1948, they moved to their farm near Bristol Center, Minn., where they continued to farm throughout their life, eventually farming with two of his sons - Jim and Bob.
Mr. and Mrs. Vagts moved to Harmony in 1971, never really retiring from the farm. They moved to Heritage Grove in 2002, two of the first residents of the new facility.
Mr. Vagts' lifelong loves were his family, his church and farming. He was active in all aspects of congregational life at St. Matthew in Granger, including serving as chairman of the building committee for the new church structure in 1954. While his life was farming, fishing in Canada was a real passion that he shared with family and friends.
He is survived by his five children, Jim of Harmony, Bob (Margaret) of Lanesboro, Jerry (Valerie) of St. Paul, Ken (Sharon) of Hastings and Joann (Terry Grabau) of Chisago City; his brother, Gareth of Cresco; 14 grandchildren: Mark, Todd, Carrie, Kim, Michelle, Angie, Rachel, Amalia, Thatcher, Paul, Tom, Chris, Mike and Yvette; and 21 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Carol, his wife of 69 years; two daughters-in-law, Judy (Thorson) Vagts and Diane (Jacobson) Vagts; and a sister-in-law, Geneva Vagts.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Granger at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Linda Helberg officiating. Visitation begins on Saturday at 10 a.m., one hour before services at the church.
