A joint graveside memorial service will be held for Rudy Ellis and Marion Haugen Ellis on Friday, July 18, at 1 p.m. at the Greenfield Lutheran Cemetery in Harmony. The Rev. Betsy Dart will officiate.

Rudolph O. Ellis died at the age of 87 on May 4, 2011, in Shawano, Wis. His wife, Marion, died at the age of 89 on Nov. 26, 2013, in Shawano.

They were married Aug. 19, 1949, in North Prairie, Minn.

Rudy was born June 25, 1923, in Harmony Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota, to the late Clarence R. and Anna M. (Harstad) Ellis. He was a teacher, coach, trainer and athletic director at Shawano High School before retiring in 1985.

He was a navy corpsman from 1942 to 1948, serving in the South Pacific and Asian Pacific.

He was a graduate of Winona State and Northern Michigan universities and a member of their alumni associations. He taught and coached in the Gale-Ettrick School District before coming to Shawano in 1957.

Rudy enjoyed reading, working on genealogy and following high school and college athletics. He was a diehard fan of the Cubs and Packers.

Marion Haugen was born May 1, 1924, in Fillmore County, the daughter of the late Ole and Susie (Hillestad) Haugen.

In 1943, after acing her mechanical aptitude test, she hitch-hiked from Minnesota to California and worked as a welder in the Kaiser Shipyards. She went on to enlist in the U.S. Army to serve her country during WWII.

She was a graduate of the Winona State Teacher's College and moved to Shawano with her husband and children in 1957.

She shared the love of sports with her husband, and was an avid supporter of high school athletics. She judged gymnastics and enjoyed bowling.

Together, she and her husband were members of the Fillmore County Historical Society and Zion Lutheran Church of Shawano.

They are survived by children, Mark (Monica) Ellis of Rochester Hills, Mich., Dr. Shari (Dr. Alan Kroll) Ellis of Gainesville, Fla., and Krista (Jim) Clumpner of ¬¬¬¬Marquette, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Anna (Jason Allen) Ellis of Pleasant Ridge, Mich., Andrew Ellis of Pittsburgh, Penn., Aaron Ellis of Denver, Colo., Dr. Jessica Kroll of Tampa, Fla., Rebecca Kroll of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Ellisa and Joseph Clumpner of Marquette, Mich.
