Winnie A. Halweg, 96, of Preston, died Friday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2014, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.

She was born June 30, 1917, at Granger in Bristol Township. She was the oldest of three daughters born to Jerome and Ida Michel.

She was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Granger.

She graduated from Harmony High School in 1935. The next year she attended Winona State College.

She was employed at the Granger State Bank for several years.

She was united in marriage to Roger Halweg at her home near Granger on Nov. 14, 1942. The couple farmed near Cresco and the Greenleafton area until moving to a farm near Preston in Carimona Township in 1964. Her husband died Dec. 7, 1995. She lived in her home in rural Preston until she was 93, spending the last three years of her life at Madonna Towers in Rochester.

She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston where she was active in the WELCA, the church circle and sang in the choir.

She is survived by three children, Ann Coplen, Richard (Sondra) Halweg and Mary (Loren) Finseth; seven grandchildren, Michael (Mary) and Daniel (Lauren Curtight) Coplen, Paul Halweg, M.D., Susannah (Brian M.D.) Spears, Rachel (Josh) Genz, Rebecca (Seth) Eisenman and Laura (Hunter) Scott; eight great-grandchildren, Jaicie, Samantha, Annabella, Luke, Sawyer, Faith, Owen and Abel; one great-great-granddaughter, Bailey and one sister, Margaret (Robert) Larson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; son-in-law, James Coplen and one sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Robert Vagts.

The funeral will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 25, at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dave Jore officiating. Spring burial will be in the New Oregon Cemetery in rural Cresco. Friends may call at the church on Saturday an hour before the service.
