The Fillmore Central/Lanesboro baseball team lost the season opener to Cotter, 6-1, but that didn't discourage coach Keith Larson.

"For this being our first game this year and having to face one of the conference favorites, I was very pleased with our play. We had one bad inning, three errors and four runs in the fifth, but we had our chances," he said. "I thought we swung the bats very well, just need to be a bit more picky on our pitch selection. We got five strong innings from Gatlin Woellert and two good innings of relieve from Nick Mensink."

Leading the Falcon hitting were senior Nick Powell and junior Kiel Larson. Each had a pair of hits. Larson knocked in Kirby O'Connor for the only FCL run. O'Connor reached base in the seventh inning with a pinch-hit single. FC/L got three hits in the seventh inning, but could only come up with the one run.

"Just couldn't get that timely hit," said Larson.

Garrett Boggs, who reached base safely all four of his at-bats, also had a single in the seventh inning. His other at-bats resulted in walks in the first, third, and fifth innings.

Woellert's stats on the mound were four hits, five runs (four earned), four walks and five strikeouts. Mensink gave up two hits, one run (earned), and one walk, while striking out three.

The Falcons did work the Cotter pitchers into four walks, three by Boggs.

The rest of the week the guys have games with Wabasha-Kellogg, Plainview-Elgin-Millville and Southland and then start next week off with a game against Schaeffer Academy. Monday's game with Houston was postponed and is hoped to be rescheduled later in the season.
