The Cougars' softball team played two games last week, traveling to Kingsland High School on April 23, and then hosting Fillmore Central/Lanesboro two days later.

Temperatures in the 30s made ball handling tough for the defense on Tuesday. With Bulldog bats putting the ball into play while the Cougars were not, many more opportunities existed for M-C fielding mistakes. The Cougars were defeated 14-1.

M-C actually out-hit Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland 4 to 3, but the Cougars committed 8 errors and issued 10 walks to Bulldog batters.

"Tuesday's game against GMLOK was a tough one," M-C coach Kati Tweeten said. "We basically gave them the win."

Winning pitcher Jamie Stevens somehow adapted to the frosty conditions. She walked no one and was backed by a two-error defense.

Down 11-0 in the fourth inning, M-C scored after Lydia Geving singled, advanced on a single from Ashlyn Dahl and scored on a passed ball.

M-C sophomore outfielder Hannah Nolte batted 2 for 3, the only player for either team with multiple hits. After missing two games, Cougar upperclassmen were back from the senior trip.

It was the season opener for GMLOK.

"Offensively we had some well hit balls but they were hit at people and we weren't able to string anything together," Tweeten noted.

Mabel-Canton versus Fillmore Central/Lanesboro

The Falcons defeated M-C 3-0. Cougar defense was improved and no errors were charged to either team, but M-C managed only 2 hits off sophomore hurler Morgan Malley who struck out 14, walked 2 and hit one batter. She fanned every Cougar batter at least once. Only one out was made in the outfield.

Kristina Mengis and Lydia Geving collected the two M-C hits. Ashlyn Dahl was the only Cougar to make it as far as second base. She stole second after being hit with a pitch in the second inning and used a walk and a passed ball to get there in the seventh.

In the pitcher's circle for M-C, Mengis allowed only 7 hits in 7 innings, but FC/L managed to put 3 hits together while scoring 3 runs in the third inning. Mengis struck out 3 batters and walked only 3, but unfortunately 2 of those free passes also came in the same third inning.

"In Thursday's game versus FC/L our defense was back against some good hitters," Tweeten said in summation. "Abby Hanson made some great plays at shortstop... She was able to take away a few hits with her tough defense. But they had some well hit balls in the third inning and were able to score 3 runs."

For FC/L, freshman Taylor Sprenger batted 3 for 4 with a double. Sophomore Kaitlynn Aug hit 2 for 3. Malley and Taylor Case also hit safely.

M-C dipped to 2-3 while FC/L improved to 2-0.
