Every player in the Fillmore Central/Lanesboro line-up, who had an at-bat got a hit in an extra innings win over Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Kingsland Monday night. All of the hits were important in the game, with some getting a little more attention than others.
Leading 8-3 going into the seventh inning, the Falcons gave up five runs in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings tied at 8-8.
In the top of the eighth, the Falcons got three hits and one run, which proved to be the game-winner. Nick Powell started the inning off with a single and was forced out at second on Nick Mensink's grounder. A two-out single by Gatlin Woellert, his third hit of the game, drove Mensink to third. With runners on the corners, senior Kirby O'Connor, got an RBI single, scoring Mensink from third, giving the Falcons a 9-8 lead, and eventually the win over the GMLOK Bulldogs.
Mensink, who relieved Josh Jones in the seventh inning, and struggled on the mound, had a great turn-around in the eighth and captured the win for FC/L. Shortstop Kiel Larson nabbed a line shot for the first out and then proceeded to get two more assists in the 1-2-3 eighth, preserving the first win of the season for the Falcons.
FC/L got the first run in the second inning on a walk (Collin Bennett), single (Woellert) and an error (Garrett Boggs) to tie the game at 1-1. Two more runs in the third inning gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead at the time. Leading the offensive attack in that second inning were Clay Olson (single), Mensink (RBI double, run), Bennett (single) and Woellert (RBI single). Blake Bigalk was a courtesy runner for Olson and scored a run.
FC/L scored a solo run in the fourth inning when Boggs reached on an error, followed by a walk to Larson, a single by Andy Love and an RBI ground-out by Olson.
The sixth inning was big for the Falcons, scoring four runs on four hits, starting with a lead-off triple by Boggs. Boggs scored on Love's ground out. FC/L then put together a two-out rally, scoring three more runs on a walk (Olson, Bigalk scored as a courtesy runner), a pair of singles (Powell, run; Mensink, run) and a double (Bennett, two RBI).
That was pretty much all of the offense for the Falcons until the decisive eighth inning.
On the mound, Josh Jones pitched the first six innings. He gave up just two hits and three runs, one of which was earned. He walked three and struck out three, until he was relieved in the seventh inning. Mensink pitched the last two innings, allowing four hits, five runs (all earned) and four walks. As mentioned earlier, Mensink had a 1-2-3, mow 'em down inning in the eighth.
Bennett and Woellert had three hits apiece in the win, with Love, Olson, Powell and Mensink contributing two hits each. Solo hits were recorded by Boggs, Larson and O'Connor. RBI went to Love, Olson, Mensink, Bennett (2), Woellert and O'Connor. Scoring the Falcon runs were Boggs (2), Bigalk (2), Powell, Mensink (3) and Bennett.
